Well it’s the day after Zombie Fest, didn’t sell many books but was able to strike deal with an airbrush T-shirt shop in Monroeville Mall called, “CuriosiTees” (custom airbrushing) which is run by a great woman named Lena who is just not a horror movie fan but a huge Steven Seagal fan! She is my goddess as she is able to exchange lines from Seagal films with me… So go visit her and buy something as she does a killer “Hellraiser” T-shirt! But anyhow, Zombie Fest was a lot of fun for me just because I got to take many pictures of all the zombies during the zombie walk and meet lots of other authors I never knew about (especially the guy who wrote a book called, “Zombie Haiku”). The show went well and sure to be even bigger and better next year. Moving on to another subject folks, how about AMC’s Monsterfest 2008 or should I call it ‘Fear Fest’? When in the fuck did Jodie Foster’s “Panic Room” become a horror film? Also AMC you couldn’t wait one freakin week to show the finale of “Mad Men”? I know gets ratings but fuck people its Halloween week! But I guess all good things come to an end and it seems anyway that Hollywood has even killed off the original “Monsterfest”!? But I say fuck it all as I got another shitload of entertaining reviews for you and a pile of DVDs that is taller than a midget’s ass that I will be reviewing for you the next few weeks. And yes people my dear friend and editor Roger Beckett is alive and well and wants to know when we are doing “Gross Movie Reviews Volume 4”…
The Car (DVD) – A very cool possessed car film that stars James Brolin as the sheriff of small western town that finds out the hard way his town is being terrorized by a dark vehicle that seems to be running people down for no reason at all except to kill people. R. G. Armstrong also makes an appearance as the ‘local wife beating drunk and explosives salesman’… Folks this was 1977, you couldn’t make this shit up! The car with its annoying horn pretty much kills half of the town before Brolin figures out it has to be the devil driving the vehicle as the filmmaker hints at it but only teases the idea which makes the film that much cooler. The funniest thing about the film is its Rated PG… But if your in the mood for something different and it has still held up after 30 years, try one of my favorites when I was a kid, “The Car” as I give it 4 stars.
The Beast Within (DVD) – A couple that just got married in the 60s and driving through a small hick town in Mississippi when they get lost and try to turn around and get stuck. Of course the man goes look for the tow truck and the woman is brutally raped by a hairy, beastly, thing… It’s present day (1980) and the same couple who once thought they had a healthy 17 year old, now have a son who is going through some horrific changes and goes back to the small town to find out some answers. “The Beast Within” is overlooked a lot of times and needs to be discovered by the new generation horror fans as it sports some very kick ass make-up effects and cool looking unstoppable monster when it does get screen time. I give the film 3 stars.
Fire & Ice (DVD/Sci-fi Channel) – For most of the time Sci-fi channel makes movies that make you want to puke worms and eat them again before watching another dam shitty CGI dragon fantasy film! But Amy Acker who was known for the “Angel” TV series and Arnold Voosloo best known as ‘Darkman’ in the “Darkman” sequels make the movie not only watchable but interesting as a kingdom is being attacked by a fire dragon that seems to be unstoppable and hell bent on killing their kingdom off until a savior is found because twenty years ago his father killed a dragon. This movie proves 1 out of 100 Sci-fi channel films are entertaining as I give it 2 ½ stars.
The Incredible Hulk (DVD) – No Eric Bana and shitty plotline this time around as Edward Norton Jr. and company give us the ‘Hulk’ movie we wanted the first time around, well most of us anyway. But Dr. Banner is on the run as he seeks out a cure but finds out he is able to control the ‘Hulk’ in the end if he learns how to do it as his alter ego is completely scary and unstoppable! The CGI still blows donkey ass but you get over that quickly as the movie is what it was made for and that’s mindless superhero summer movie entertainment with an ending I really enjoyed… I give this ‘Hulk’ film 2 ½ stars as I still say the ‘Hulk’ should go smash the Bana and Nolte abomination!
Dead + Rotting (DVD) – A low budget favorite from producers Charles Band and JR Bookwalter that stars Debbie Rochon as a witch who seeks revenge on three men who killed her kid/cat. Her revenge is her getting topless and having sex with all three men in order to bring three ghouls to life to kill them. Trent Haaga and Jeff Dylan Graham also star is this worthwhile low budget film that I give 3 stars and is available at www.fullmoondirect.com .
Stitches (DVD) – A demon wears human skin as a costume so she can visit a boarding home that has many roommates who are willing to sell their soul for certain things. The idea has been done quite a few times but this film was excellent in my opinion as the story is set in 40s and was well done unlike some of the others as I give it 2 ½ stars and is available through www.fullmoondirect.com and also had the producers Charles Band and JR Bookwalter behind the film.
Stephen King’s The Stand (DVD) – A huge book from the great horror writer that was brought to the small screen on ABC in 1994 starring many TV and movie stars and spawned 8 hours with commercials. Not a bad movie but does no justice for the book as its about a super flu is let out and kills 99% of the population and the other 1% begins a war between god and the devil as the survivors are the pawns in this war. For the most part the film will put you to sleep and its retarded at times but makes the horror fan’s mind wonder as George Romero who was once attached to the project would have done with such a project if he was left alone to do the project the way he thought it should be done! I give it 1 star. Look for special appearances by King himself, John Landis, and many other horror related stars throughout the film.

“OF DARKNESS TO BE MADE AVAILABLE ON DVD FRIDAY, OCTOBER 31!
Posted by Tim on October 24, 2008Philadelphia, PA – October 24, 2008 – That’s right horror fans, Halloween marks the spot for “Of Darkness”, the award-winning horror short from Eventide Productions.
Since 2006 “Of Darkness” has been taking the horror film festival circuit by storm. Having been accepted as an ‘Official Selection’ by more than twenty festivals, the film garnered ten “Best Short Film” nominations and won more than half of those nods, bringing home SIX BEST SHORT FILM awards. The little film with the heart of a feature didn’t stop there - it also took home awards for most “Most Promising Filmmaker”, “Best Cinematography”, and “Audience Award for Best Short Film”!
Well, it’s the witching season once again…and what better way to cap it all off than with a Halloween DVD release. The film, dubbed by critics as “20-minutes of pure suspense driven horror”, & “a super-concentrated burst of suspense & terror” by Film Threat, makes its DVD debut in a Collector’s Edition version with loads of special features. Included with the film will be the behind-the-scenes featurette “The Other Side Of Darkness”, with never before seen footage of the cast & crew on set as well as interviews with the filmmakers. Audio commentaries, storyboard comparisons, trailers, and production stills will round out the special features when the film hits the streets on All Hallows Eve.
Eventide Productions is now accepting pre-orders, via their online store @ eventideproductions. net. The DVD list price is $12.99 standalone, and is also available as a part of some pretty fun combo packs combining some additional “Of Darkness” swag. To take advantage of the pre-order opportunity, visit Eventide’s store.
In a final bit of exciting news, “Of Darkness” is set to air on FEARnet, Comcast’s online & on-demand outlet for all things horror, in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for the official project premiere date in the very near future.

To Hell with Angel’s Night…we’re bringing the revelry back to devilry in Detroit!
On Devil’s Night (October 30) 2008 in Detroit, there will be a congregation of over 40 of the most controversial fine art artists from across the nation and overseas to display over 100 of their darkest of creations at DAMNED: A Macabre Fine Art Exhibition (www.thatdamnedshow.com). From HR Giger to the freshest of talent, this sinister assembly will exhibit a diversity of artistries from the deeply depraved to the intensely introspective guaranteed to intrigue, disturb, captivate or repulse. This is not Halloween-themed art but a submergence within the shadowed realms of consciousness within an intimate ambiance of haunting ethereal soundscapes, refined freakshow vignettes and cirque-inspired stage performances.
DAMNED is hosted, with special performances, by the tantalizing circus hellion Miss Pussykatt fresh from her “grinder girl” act on NBC’s America’s Got Talent. Other devilish treats include the all femme fatale performance troupe Devil Dolls, new dementias from Satori Circus, “refined freakshow” vignettes, Devil Girl hostesses, VIP area with an on-site chef courtesy of Centaur Bar, a gallery store to purchase art and much more yet to be announced! Aurally, the exhibition will be laced with the ethereal soundscapes of Life Toward Twilight and the haunting solo strings of Dixon accompanying the gallery vignettes.
The DAMNED festivities begin at 7pm with a VIP Preview and Artist Reception with the general public opening at 9pm until 2am. General admission is $6.66, $5 in advance or $5 with a donation of canned good for the Detroit Gleaners Food Bank or canned/dry pet food for the All About Animals no-kill animal rescue. No Halloween costumes are necessary but red dressy/sexy Devil-wear is greatly encouraged. 18+ welcome.

Gross Movie Reviews #139
Posted by Tim on October 13, 2008Gross Movie Reviews #139
By Tim Gross
“How sweet, fresh meat!” – Freddy Krueger
The Other Gods (DVD) – An animated Lovecraft short film with nothing but music and subtitles about a man that wanted to touch the gods and traveled to the place he could do it. A very beautiful animated short worth checking out, especially if you are a Lovecraft fan as you can find it on the internet at www.maddogmovies.com/theothergods as I give it 3 stars.
Monster Make-Up: Dick Smith (DVD) – A lost relic on VHS found by Ron Bonk and others at SRS Cinema as it is demonstrational video of legendary FX master Dick Smith who shows and helps you become a vampire in a cheap, quick, and convincing manner. The video runs about 40 minutes and is most likely the most informative thing I have seen done by any Hollywood make-up artist. This is a must have for any video collector, young and inspiring make-up FX artists, and also for the backyard filmmakers as I give this great video 4 stars. To find out more about it or purchase it, check out www.srscinema.com .
Horror Effects: Tom Savini (DVD) – No, this isn’t the Scream Greats video that was released in the early 80s. This is another behind the scenes look at Savini and his creations while being interviewed by John Russo on video back 1989 and shows how he goes more in-depth on how he created some of his monsters and effects with the help of Greg Nicotero and John Vulich. The video not only shows more of Savini showing off but shows what else it takes to do make-up besides squibs and so on as he talks and shows how they make “Fluffy” from ‘Creepshow’ move and interact with the camera when action is called. The video runs around 40 minutes and is a beautiful collector’s video for any 80s slasher film fan or young make-up artist. I give this DVD 4 stars and can be found or purchased at www.srscinema.com .
Plan 9 From Syracuse (DVD) – A non-horror independent film about a filmmaker in New York that has decided to put a game plan together in order to get the attention of a famous film producer to get his projects made since he is done making low budget films. An interesting and a great reality film of how the filmmaker runs across America in order to get the producer’s attention and to show he means business. Now, the film is cool and really interesting and something different to watch but here’s the problem: the producer is Mark Cuban and the filmmaker learns the answer that everybody already knows in the end. Personally, I’m from Pittsburgh and all who have lived most of their lives in the burgh know of Mark Cuban and how much hot air he is full of and an ass he is! For me does that take away from how good the film is? No. The filmmaker showed me he has passion and creativity… I only wished instead of spending half a year running across America to get the attention of Cuban and try to get a meeting with him that he could have put all this passion and creativity into a no budget project of his. Because if he is that talented and that driven, somebody will find him! I give the DVD 3 stars and can be found or purchased at www.srscinema.com .
Big Fish in Middlesex (DVD) – A story about four male friends in their early twenties living in a racist southern small town and just trying to survive it one way or another. The film pushes the two hour mark a little long for my taste but is still a well casted and written film that pretty much takes a page out of present time and puts it up on screen for all to see for almost two hours. Surprisingly the filmmaker was even able to interject some humor into such a serious film where the four friends feel they might be at a crossroads in their lives and wonder what exactly they should do next instead of just fucking the next bar whore, selling crack, or just sitting in the same bar night after night drinking until the sun comes up. I say the film is well written because anybody that sees the film will say they have friends or were friends with one or more of the characters in the film. When it comes down to it, it’s a film about real people in present times as I give it 3 stars and can be found or purchased at www.srscinema.com .
Cannibal Holocaust (Theater) – A film from the late 70s that was so shocking it was banned in many countries. This film should be watched by all horror fans including the kiddies and rejects that think ‘Hostel’ is such a great torture film as “Cannibal Holocaust” makes ‘Hostel’ look like ‘Barney the Dinosaur’ show! The film is not only fucked up but still shocking and jaw dropping like no other! The film begins with a scientist insisting to go look for four young college students who ventured off into the jungle to find an ancient tribe known for “cannibalism” and film it. The scientist and two guides make their way into the jungle and after finding the tribe the students were looking for they trade for the film footage the students shot only to find out that the shocking footage contains some of most demonic, grossest, and sickest scenes ever filmed but leaves you asking along with the man that went into the jungle to retrieve the footage, “who is the real cannibals?” I have seen a lot of the recent torture films that have come out and they have nothing on “Cannibal Holocaust” as this film separates the men from the boys when it comes to those types of films! I give it 4 stars for its awesome sickness and brutality.
Cannibal Ferrox (Theater) - This film has its fans out there but falls short of being anywhere near as interesting and good as “Cannibal Holocaust”. But anyway a man and two women take a trip into the jungle only to have their jeep break down and run into two shady characters who don’t exactly want them to know why they are injured and on the run from a tribe of Amazons. Long and boring at times and sorry the 80s boobies on the blonde chic doesn’t keep me excited for this dud of a flick where it’s only pay offs are the dude’s dick getting cut off and eaten and the blonde chic getting her 80s boobies impaled on some giant fish hooks. Now these scenes are great but take entirely way too long to get to as it reminds me that was the big problem with “The Mutilator”. I give it 1 ½ stars but at least it is still better than “Hostel”.
20 Years After (DVD) – A modest budgeted independent flick about a man who is still broadcasting over the airwaves 20 years after bombs were dropped, plagues have killed everyone, and cities have died. This radio man as he is called in the movie is deciding it is time for him to venture into the wasteland to find someone, anyone. Meanwhile, a mother and her grown daughter and new doctor friend make their way to a place that has water since they are running low. With the daughter pregnant this seems to be a miracle as there isn’t any small children running around and there is others out in the wastelands that want the child for their own selfish reasons. A worthwhile post-apocalyptic independent film worth the rental fee at the video store some time as I give it 2 ½ stars and can find out more about it at www.mtivideo.com .
Riddles of the Sphinx (DVD/Sci-fi Channel) – A generic version of Indiana Jones that must kill a CGI sphinx that is going to bring a great plague to the world now that he has been released from his prison. It’s Sci-Fi Channel for the love of god. What the hell you expect? I give it 1 star.
Any comments or questions please send to: GrossMovieReview@aol.com or www.myspace.com/slasherfilmfan .
