From our good buddy, John Johnson:
“In 1959, a film was released that would live in the minds and hearts of science fiction and horror fans for years to come. That film was Edward D. Wood, Jr.’s magnum opus, “Plan 9 From Outer Space”, a story about aliens re-animating the dead in order to kill Earth’s population. Though widely regarded as one of the worst films ever made, genre audiences could not resist the exuberance and love for the art of filmmaking that showed in Wood’s work, and the movie has become a cherished cult classic that still survives on home video and in midnight screenings across the world.
Now, in time to coincide with the 50th anniversary of “Plan 9 From Outer Space”, director John Johnson – along with his production company, Darkstone Entertainment – is poised to remake the classic film. Simply titled “Plan 9″, the remake will be a serious-minded retelling of the original story, paying homage to the spirit of Wood’s film without resorting to camp or parody. The film will focus on the horror and science fiction aspects of the original, but will also be largely character-driven.
Johnson’s goal for “Plan 9″ is to make a film that honors not only the original source material, but also Ed Wood’s intentions when he made “Plan 9 From Outer Space”. Wood’s plan was to make a very scary sci-fi/horror film, and Johnson wishes to do exactly that – create a film that Wood would have enjoyed, or perhaps even made himself, if not bound by the technological limitations placed on filmmakers 50 years ago.
“Plan 9″ is being made with the blessing and participation of Conrad Brooks, the sole surviving member of the original film’s cast and crew. To go as a sister project to the remake, director Johnson and actor Brooks plan to do a commentary for the original film with a Q + A retrospective for its 2 disc DVD release with no set street date at the moment, however the new film is scheduled to premiere on September 9, 2009 (09.09.09).
“Even if Eddie was a little off in his filmmaking skills, you cannot deny his passion. I feel a strong camaraderie for the man and his work, and hope that I can make a film that would be as loved by audiences today as the original was for his generation…Only this time with its true intention.”
-John Johnson”

Frank Forte, creator of The Vampire Verses, Insidious Tales and The Asylum Of Horrors, is releasing the first issue of a new character, Warlash, through his company Asylum Press. Four stories, 56 pages, and one low price of $3.95 allow every reader to get a serious value for their comic book dollar.
Frank Forte describes, “One part tortured hero, two parts hard core action, with a heaping helping of desperate femme fatales and thugs mixed with the hearbeat of a dirty Pittsburgh is the strong stiff drink we are offering fans. We want to introduce Warlash with these short noir vignettes. It will give the readers a chance to see the character, his environments and the nasty villians he will encounter. Everyone deals with inner demons and some of the baddies he fights are in his own head. “
“There will be a lot of hard-hitting action and carnage, ” Forte continues,” especially to cyborgs and mutants. I foresee a high body count.”
In this giant sized first issue, Warlash, an armored warrior of the apocalyptic future, is back with a vengeance. This issue reintroduces Warlash with four tales of hard boiled crime noir terror. With interior art by Frank Forte, Szymon Kudranski, Steve Mannon and a cover by Bruno Werneck, the tales of mutant cyborgs, satanic rituals and seedy crimelords come to life.

THE BLOOD FARM
July 4th weekend, a group of friends head to the beach to party.
A detour leads them off their planned route and through a strange, small town. A simple stop along the way turns violent and the girls are forced to flee into the nearby woods. They quickly discover that the abandoned cattle farm where they look for help is home to one of the town’s darkest secrets.

I just got back from a sneak preview tonight and I have to say, if you thought the first Hulk movie was a piece of shit, then you’ll really despise it after seeing the new one. I won’t reveal too much, but I will say this movie is not a let down. It’s a Hulk movie made like a real fucking Hulk movie. I haven’t seen a slug fest on the streets on New York this good since Superman II. There’s plenty of nods of the head to the TV show(cameos and some subtle references), comics(Doc Samson, nuff said), the Xbox game from a few years ago(The Hulk makes boxing gloves out of a car), and King Kong(really). William Hurt and Ed Norton are dead on. Liv Tyler seems a little awkward at first but her new post pregnancy juggs more than make up for it. My only real objection was that the Abomination looked like a cross between Swap Thing and something I fragged in Doom 3, but Tim Roth pulls it off. It’s funny, action to put Segal to shame, and as fun as Iron Man(yes more Avengers teasers). It is a little ironic however that Homeland Security doesn’t seem to pay much attention to the security of civilians when the Hulk is concerned, oh well fuck them for getting in the way…gotta love collateral damage. So kick Ed Norton in his purple pants for all his bitching and not doing press and go see The Incredible Hulk.

After spending the month of May outside working around the house and garage, I guess it’s time to go back to work…
The show’s Guest page is up-to-date. Chock full of new faces, as well as a couple returning fan favorites, I think we’ve got another great batch of guests lined up for October’s show. Head on over to the Guest Page and see if you don’t agree with me.
I’ve also posted half a dozen new films we’ll be screening at the next show, along with a few event graphics. Some good stuff to look forward to on the Films and Events page as well, so be sure to check it over after you punch up the guest page.
Cinema Wasteland’s resident horror host, A. Ghastlee Ghoul, will be celebrating his 20th anniversary this October. If you need a Ghastlee fix before the next Wasteland Show, don’t miss A. Ghastlee Ghoul’s Splattertude Radio where you can catch yours truly doing his thing with The Wasteland Blues Block. New shows every week at: www.splattertude.com
It’s time for us here to get on the road again. We’ve trimmed a couple of conventions from our schedule this year, but there are still more than enough cons, festivals, and shows to go around this season. Why not punch up MEET THE WASTELAND on the main web page to see if we’ll be in your area any time this summer.
Looks like that’s all I have for this month, so let’s end things with the usual batch of Cinema Wasteland Movie and Memorabilia Expo reminders:
TICKETS: For everything we offer attending fans, there is no better bargain than an advance ticket to a Cinema Wasteland Show and no better time to plan to be with us than right now. No “hidden fees” at a Wasteland show guarantees every fan through the door is treated just like the person standing next to you in line; and your ticket in gets you everything we have to offer except for an autograph from our guests. Order before 9/5/08 and you can get an advance 3-Day Pass for only $30.00. Yes, that was correct: Thirty bucks. Cheap at twice the price if you ask me. You can also save $5.00 on any single day pass ordered in advance before 9/5/08. With prices for damn near everything high and the shaved monkey’s economy in the toilet, there is no better way to get your moneys worth than attending a Wasteland weekend.
HOTEL: The hotel sold out in record time last show, and with every hotel and motel in the area more than likely raising prices on you by what I hear, I can’t imagine it’s not a good idea to reserve your room ASAP for October’s show. You can reserve your room by calling The Holiday Inn direct at (440) 238-8800, or reserve your room on our web site. Just remember to ask for “The Cinema Wasteland rate of $89 per night” in order to save yourself a few bucks over regular room rates, and DO NOT take the hotel up on any other offers they may mention as that won’t help you or us in the long run.
FLIERS and POSTCARDS: Updated fliers and postcards will be available in the next couple of weeks. Bars, specialty shops, video stores, tattoo parlors, college campuses, music stores… All good places for Wasteland attendees to hang out. If you frequent any place that you think may be a good place to put a stack of fliers and you’d like to help spread the Wasteland word, then by all means, get in touch and I’ll be more than happy to send off a stack of fliers or postcards. As always, any help in spreading the word about the show is appreciated.
VIDEO FOOTAGE: I’m always looking for any and all footage fans may have shot over the course of the weekend. I’m particularly interested in the panels, guest talks, and Ghastlee’s Saturday night live show, but I love to check out whatever anyone shoots at the show. I used to get a lot of footage from people for my personal collection, but it’s slowed down greatly over the past couple of years (so I’m really looking for footage from the past three or four shows). We’re the only show out there that let’s attending fans shoot anywhere they want, so hey, give a little back to the guy who makes it happen for you fans. Our PO Box address is at the bottom of every update we send out…
That’s it for this time around. If I don’t see you during our June travels, then I’ll catch you next update.
Cheers,
Ken
