Gross Movie Reviews #119

By Tim Gross  “Well dad, the guys and I were thinking about going to see Groundhog Day Part 12!” – The Monster Squad

The Bank Job (Theater) – A British film based on a true story that happened in 1971 that stars our man the “Transporter”, Jason Statham. Apparently, the cops hired small time bank thieves to brake into a bank and steal some pictures of the royal family in unsavory sexual positions, but find a whole lot more besides cash when the mob, crooked cops, the royal senate, a porn king, etc. are trying to kill them. A really cool action film for all film buffs! I give the film 3 stars.

Eel Girl (DVD) – The great filmmaker, Paul Campion, which gave us one of my favorite short films ever, “Night of the Hell Hamsters”, is still looking for funding for a full length feature but in the meantime Paul made another short film about five minutes long called, “Eel Girl”. This short centers on a very mysterious location with doctors maybe scientists watching their experiment very intently! One is ordered to leave and the other decides it is time to open the door! What happens next is pretty dam fucking cool… and just like “Hell Hamsters” makes you want more and wonder how cool it would be to see this as a feature in the theaters. I give it 3 ½ stars as I think Paul could be a dangerous filmmaker if he has investors backing his projects. You can find out more about the short film at www.myspace.com/eelgirlfilm or check out www.eelgirl.net .

Night of the Lepus (DVD) – An awesome movie from 1972 that stars Janet Leigh and has giant rabbits attacking cattle ranchers out west! You need to see this horror fans! I give it 3 ½ stars.

Hannibal (DVD) – It took them ten years and moving on without Jodie Foster to make a sequel to one of the coolest serial killer films ever made but they did. Ridley Scott took over the director reins this time and has a different Clarice played by the sexy Julianne Moore ten years after Hannibal Lector escaping. Hannibal has resurfaced in Italy and finds out that his one crush Clarice is having trouble with her superiors and has just been suspended. But one of the victims of Lector that survived is searching for Lector and looks to help Clarice and renews her interest in finding the escapee! A perfect follow-up that stands on its own but also expands the Hannibal universe with a thrilling bloody ride to the end that keeps it open incase they film another one. With the making of this great thriller two things happened: a) Jodie Foster was seen as a dumb ass for passing this up and b) Hollywood decided to make “Red Dragon” and a movie with Hannibal as a teenager instead of doing one more sequel while Anthony Hopkins is in his prime and still able to pull off the role! I give the DVD 4 stars and the special edition has shitloads of extras including lots of deleted scenes and a different ending. A note for film buffs: in a scene when Clarice is looking at the F.B.I. most wanted list on her computer, if you look close you see none other than Bin Laden is on the list as the film was made before 9/11…

Retards Shouldn’t Run With Chainsaws (DVD) – One of DSK’s early films that has a character named “shittooth” who is retarded and trying to kill four guys who is surprised by his presence at their house. Bad acting, no budget, and funny dialogue make for a so-so but still funny film from Rick and the DSK crew. I give it 2 ½ stars and can be purchased at www.dsk-productions.com .

The Diane Linkletter Story (DVD-R) – An early John Waters short film that starred Divine and gained the filmmaker some respect before he attempted to start filming his features we all know and love. To be honest I almost can’t give it a rating just because the video of the short film is poor and there really isn’t any way for it to be remastered but if you see it you understand what I’m talking about as I give it 3 stars.

Desperate Living (DVD) – The king of filth, John Waters goes even a step further into cementing his name as the trashiest filmmaker ever as this film is about a skinny white rich girl who whines a lot and is taken to the bad part of town by her black housemaid after they kill her husband. Blood, gay sex, bad sex, lots of trash, shit, whatever Waters didn’t do in “Pink Flamingos” he put in this film. Trash would be a kind word for this film as it even made me cringe trying to finish watching it but I still give it 2 stars. Like him or hate him, I will always respect Mr. Waters for his filmmaking talent.
