Gross Movie Reviews #116By Tim Gross “Wolfman wore pants to cover… his WOLFDORK!” – The Monster Squad

Darkbreed (DVD) – A low budget Alien/Predator/Species rip-off! Pretty cool looking indestructible creature, shitty movie; I give the movie 1 star.

Above the Law (DVD) – The great one, Steven Seagal, stars in his first feature that came out in early 1988 as a Chicago cop ‘Nico’ partnered with the lovely 70s film star Pam Grier fighting off a man from his past when Seagal served in the special forces. This man has hit the streets of Chicago with a new form of his drugs and wants to take over the city. “Above the Law” and “Lethal Weapon” that came out the year before changed how cop action flicks were made. Steven’s first film gained lots of praise from critics for giving something different in an action film and put himself on the map in Hollywood for many years to come. This film is a fan favorite for not only me but for non-Seagal fans as well as there is lots of violence, fighting, arms breaking in half, and lots Steven Seagal just being Seagal! I give this film 4 stars.

Out for Justice (DVD/Theater) – The classic Seagal film is a non-stop runaway action flick that stars Steve Seagal as a Chicago cop searching for a crazed, drugged out wannabe mobster, William Forsythe as Richie. The film pretty much is non-stop action film from beginning to end as Richie goes on a killing spree in Chicago like no other action film I’ve seen. Seagal searches all the dive bars and places looking for Richie in Seagal like fashion asking, “Has anybody seen Richie?” Another classic Seagal line in this blood soaked, arm breaking, classic climactic end fight scene that never gets old when watching it for the first or 100th time! I give this film 4 stars.

Under Siege (DVD/Theater) – Steven Seagal struck pay dirt with this film as he plays “just the cook” who is an undercover Special Forces officer on a Navy plane carrier that is taken over by terrorists. The film came out just before the first Iraq war and starred Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey as the lead villains, a pair of perfect tits that have never been seen like this before, and Seagal playing the role of ‘just a cook’ perfectly as its up to him to stop the terrorists before they launch an attack on the US! “Under Siege” is Seagal’s best grossing film ever. I give this fun action film 4 cooks! Strange note about this film is it was rumored when this film was being shot that Bruce Wills was about to do a similar film for Die Hard 2 but was beaten to the punch by Seagal.

On Deadly Ground (DVD) – This film was the follow up to “Under Siege” and might be his worst film out of any he has made as Seagal goes completely environmental on us and preaches about oil spills and so as he faces off with unlikely villain in Michael Caine who plays a big time oil rig owner who doesn’t care about the environment. The movie is a bit preachy and not a whole lot of Seagal we come to love and know is pretty much it as I give this film 2 stars.

Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (DVD/Theater) - This Seagal film was an example of pretty much going to the well ‘one too many times’ as this film did not have any kind of impact as the first “Under Siege” film did and did poorly at the box office. But anyhow in classic Seagal fashion, terrorists take over a train where himself and his niece Kate (Bride of Chucky) Heigel traveling on and its up to Seagal to save the day again. Better than “On Deadly Ground” but a disappointment if you are a fan of the original. I give this film 2 ½ stars.

Fire Down Below (DVD) – There was a period of time where it seemed Seagal disappeared then came this country atmosphere action flick that came out of nowhere in the late 90s where Steven Seagal plays a EPA agent with a gun and attitude sent to a small town in Kentucky where people are getting sick and dying. With the help of Harry Dean Stanton Seagal founds out that toxic waste is being dumped in local mines and water supplies and killing the small town as a big money man Kris Kristofferson gains the rewards. Lots of country music, lots of Seagal kicking ass, in a much underrated Seagal film that weirdly enough kicked off Seagal’s country music career! Yes, you heard me… I have tickets to one of his shows to prove it! I give this flick 3 stars.

Living Hell (DVD/Sci-fi Channel) – An oddity of such for Sci-fi Channel features as this film is about a bacteria of somekind that is produced by a scientist years ago that kills everything and hidden is away in an old army base that is marked for demolition. Of course curious officers who are running the demo project are told by a half-crazed man a story about his mother talking about a bacteria locked away that can kill everything there is and cannot be stopped open the container holding it. Most of the effects are CG’d but this oddity of a feature is actually entertaining and exciting to watch as no one knows how to stop the living bacteria as it is killing everyone and trying to spread throughout the world. And to top the entertaining feature off the film has an ending where the crazed man makes a remark about if he never told them about his story none of what happen would of never happened which is a “big no, no…” in films for some reason because there is no point to the film then, right? Or at least according to the people making the films, but I personally thought it was refreshing. I give the movie 3 stars.

Xtro (DVD) – An awesome gooey sci-fi/horror film about a man who is abducted and his son witnesses it only to return in a bloody fashion to say the least for his son. For a foreign film made in early 1982 it has an excellent creature, lots of gooey blood and effects, and a birthing scene of the man returning that will make you cringe, cover your eyes, and never want to be in the delivery room again to see a baby being born! I give this flick 3 stars and can be found on DVD with Xtro 2 or on another DVD with Xtro 2 and Skeeter, a must have for horror fans!

Xtro 2: The Second Encounter (DVD) – For the most part an above average rip-off of “Alien” but has nothing to do with its original film that was made eight years earlier. This time around the film stars the great “Hooper” actor Jan-Michael Vincent as a man who is a survivor of traveling to another dimension but went supposedly mad after his return destroying the facility that sent him. Three years later… the same scientists have finally rebuilt and send three people to the same dimension only to see something totally scary and not able to bring back the personnel. So Vincent’s character is brought to help them figure out what went wrong. One person comes back, but not alone as she carries a creature that guts her like a fish from the inside and goes on a killing spree in the facility searching for knowledge of its victims it kills. “Leviathan” comes to mind also when watching the film but “Xtro 2” is on a lower scale but more fun because of the cool creature, a lot more blood and a cooler creature that you get to see more of. I give the fun sci-fi/horror film 2 ½ stars. You can find this film available together with “Xtro” on one DVD or in a 2-disc set with “Xtro” and “Skeeter”, a must have for horror movie and Jan-Michael Vincent fans.

Midnight Syndicate Releases Soundtrack to Robert Kurtzman’s movie, The Rage.

Posted by Tim on February 25, 2008

Midnight Syndicate Releases Soundtrack to Robert Kurtzman’s movie, The Rage.  February 26, 2008 (Cleveland, OH) ─ For the past eleven years, Midnight Syndicate has been taking listeners on musical journeys into the darkest corners of their imagination with their soundtracks to imaginary films.   Now they bring their music to the big screen with their soundtrack to Robert Kurtzman’s drive-in/late-night horror show thriller, The Rage, produced by Precinct 13 Entertainment.  Both the film and the soundtrack will be released on February 26th. “Edward Douglas and Midnight Syndicate have composed an exciting, unrelenting, pulse pounding, score that propels The Rage along at breakneck speed,” says director Robert Kurtzman.  The CD promises menacing ambience and signature Midnight Syndicate dark soundscape mixed with high octane, pulse-pounding action and chase themes guaranteed to get your blood pumping.   “Being the score to an actual film, however, The Rage CD is very different from our other Midnight Syndicate releases,” explains composer Edward Douglas.  “The disc is much more atmospheric with big, dynamic movements that are following the action in what is a very intense and high energy horror film.”   The CD is currently available online at Midnight Syndicate’s official website (www.MidnightSyndicate.com), Amazon, and CDBaby.   It will also be available at Hot Topic stores that have music sections on March 18th.  Samples and more information can be found on the band’s website and at www.MySpace.com/MidnightSyndicate.

About Midnight Syndicate
For the past eleven years, Midnight Syndicate has been creating soundtracks for the imagination.  Their eight “soundtracks to imaginary films” have sparked the imagination of fans of gothic music, heavy metal, the horror genre, Halloween, the Haunted Attraction industry, and fantasy role-playing games, as well as set atmosphere for television shows, movies, and video games.  At no time is their impact felt more than at Halloween.  In fact, their dark-themed instrumental CDs have become an integral piece of the world’s celebration of the holiday.   Whether it’s an amusement park like Universal Studios or Six Flags, your local haunted house, the Playboy Mansion, a King Diamond or Misfits concert, a Discovery Channel special, a Monday Night Football game in October, a Carnival cruise, a talk show like Ellen Degeneres, or your neighbor playing it out his window to set the mood for his Halloween display – Midnight Syndicate sits alongside the Monster Mash when it comes to music for the season.  Their signature dark orchestrations and soundscape have carried them into the roleplaying game industry where they recorded the first official soundtrack to Hasbro’s Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game and eventually into the film world when they recently scored The Rage.    Currently the band is preparing for its September 1st release, The Dead Matter, a stand-alone CD that is based on the themes and characters from their upcoming supernatural horror thriller, The Dead Matter (www.TheDeadMatter.com).  The story-driven The Dead Matter movie is produced by Midnight Syndicate Films and Precinct 13 Entertainment.  Currently in post-production with an anticipated released date in late-2008, early-2009, it is the largest undertaking in the band’s history.
About The Rage movieThe Rage movie was produced by Precinct 13 Entertainment (www.p13entertainment.com) and is distributed by Screen Media Films and Universal Home Entertainment.  In the independent spirit of the Evil Dead, Phantasm, and Re-Animator franchises, The Rage harkens back to a time when lower budget movies aimed to give audiences the rush they couldn’t get from a major studio release.  An adrenaline-filled roller coaster ride of a film born of drive-in and late-night horror shows, The Rage tells the story of a once benevolent scientist (played by Andrew Divoff of TV’s Lost) whose work and life become twisted as they spin out of his control.  The Rage movie’s official website is www.TheRageFilm.com.

Gross Movie Reviews #115

Gross Movie Reviews #115By Tim Gross “What do you want with them? All that is up there is… dead folk!” (Nightbreed)

AVP-R (Theater) – Without much help from Paul Anderson this time around the film picks up directly after the end of the last film. The hybrid Predator/Alien is now living and killing all the surprised Predators on the ship. Right before the last Predator dies he sends a distress call and the ship ends up crash landing on earth. One lone Predator comes to the distress call and Aliens begin to wreck havoc on earth or in Colorado in this case and begin to kill all humans they come in contact with as they begin to make it their home. The film sounds great right? Well, wrong… the film spends way too much time trying to develop the human characters on earth. For the love of God people, it’s “AVP” the sequel! Yes, we get to see lots of Alien/Predator fighting, tons of gore and a kid dies, but half of the movie is character development and trying to correct little mistakes made in the past and making sure everything ties in with the rest of the Alien/Predator movie universe. Hollywood, this should have been a kick ass blood bath from the beginning! I had all the character development I needed in the first “AVP”! It was a better movie than the first but not enough for me to actually enjoy what should have been one of the best films of 2007! One highlight though is Robert (Lifeforce) Joy playing a Colonel giving the okay to level the Colorado town and having a big part in how the film ends, but too little, too late! I give the film 2 stars as I hope they make a new Predator or Alien stand alone film before they tackle another “AVP” sequel!

Riki-OH: The Story of Ricky (VHS) – A balls to walls kung fu story about a man named Ricky, who seems to possess superpowers as he rips out people’s stomachs, punches holes through people’s chests, and makes their heads explode on impact of his fist! It’s the future and he goes to prison for manslaughter where if he doesn’t make friends he is killing off all the top tough guys there! There is shitloads of blood and gore, and the movie is just fucking awesome! I give it 4 stars.

Night of the Living Dorks (DVD) – A German horror/comedy about some high school geeks who accidentally turn into zombies and find their new abilities of being dead a way to be popular and have a big party at their house. Cool effects and funny dialogue make this film one kick ass funny teen horror flick! I give it 3 ½ stars.

Terror Toons (DVD) - Lizzie Borden mostly known for her so-called porn work and her stint in XPW stars in this adventurous film that deals with animation on a low budget level. While watching a new cartoon, Lizzie becomes hypnotized by the cartoon’s good doctor and his pet gorilla and come into reality to break up her sister’s party. I give the film credit for being different and trying something somewhat new on the low budget level but it fails to deliver anything but a boring and annoying slasher film that could have been better if it would been a short film instead of a feature length film. The film is worth at least one watch and can be found at www.braindamagefilms.com as I give the film 1 ½ stars.

Fido (DVD) – A very different take on the zombie genre as the story looks to be set in the 1950s where the zombie attack has come and gone and zombies have been… house broken! With these collars the zombies wear around their necks, it makes them controllable and controls their hunger for flesh. Most zombies are butlers, caddies, stockboys, and even pets. The main plotline pretty much runs like an old “Lassie” episode. Where a kid becomes friends with his new pet and the pet saves him whenever the kid is in trouble. Funny at times and original for an oversaturated genre, I give the movie 3 stars.

Creatures From the Pink Lagoon (DVD) – A funny movie about a gathering of gay friends for a birthday where they end up under attack by gay zombies and has underlying gay love story with it! Yes, gay zombies and they explain how you can tell they are gay zombies. I thought I seen everything until I seen this! The film is shot in black and white B-movie fashion and set in the 50s like the Universal Monster film. Lots of gay references but in all good fun (like a Judy Garland song killing some of the gay zombies) with its all gay cast also. This film is a must see for all as this would have been a perfect midnight theater film that could be shown for many weekends. I give the film 3 stars.

This Filthy World [John Waters] (DVD-R) – John Waters’s stand-up routine that features lots of gay jokes about the different gay communities, the president, etc. Plus John talks a lot in depth about his film career as he takes you through his earliest film to his latest film and his latest ventures and all the stories in-between! His monologue is not only witty but very interesting as he tells how there was no film permits back in the day and what it was like to work with real Hollywood actors such as Johnny Depp. If you ever were interested in John Waters as a person and filmmaker as I am, or have always been a huge fan of his work this is a must own as I give it 3 stars.

Skeeter (DVD) – Charles (Body Count) Napier, Michael (American Gothic) Pollard, Jim Youngs (who in the fuck is this guy), and Tracy Griffith take on monstrous mosquitoes which have been mutated by poor toxic waste storage! If that isn’t enough to watch then Tracy is as she is a very sexy, fiery hot redhead that is a male and sometimes female horror fan’s dreamgirl! Dam she is fucking hot… But anyhow I give this horror classic 3 stars and it is available on DVD by itself with no extras or on a Triple Feature with the classics “Xtro” and “Xtro 2”!

World Zombie Day is Coming!

Posted by Tim on February 20, 2008

World Zombie Day & ZF08

.. google_ad_section_start –>Following up on its successful inaugural convention last fall, The It’s Alive Show (www.theitsaliveshow.com) is pleased to announce the 2008 Zombie Fest, which will be held at the Pittsburgh ExpoMart on October 25 and 26. And the show is taking zombie walks to a new level by coordinating World Zombie Day.

Zombie Fest is a weekend of activities for zombie and horror fans which will feature a two-day convention with vendors, artists, celebrity guests, films and author panels; a masquerade ball; and the third annual Zombie Walk which will take place at Monroeville Mall, site of the George Romero zombie film, Dawn of the Dead.

The two previous Monroeville Mall Zombie Walks in 2006 and 2007 (pending verification) set Guinness World Records– for the largest zombie gathering; the 2007 walk is nominated for a Rondo Hattan Classic Horror Award for Best Fan Event. This year, organizer Mark Menold, producer and host of The It’s Alive Show, has even bigger plans for the walk. “We’ve been thinking about a World Zombie Day since the day after our first walk”, says Menold. “In 2008, we’re going to contact zombie walk organizers across the globe to coordinate walks on the same day, all benefiting their local food banks and raising awareness of hunger worldwide.” The Monroeville Zombie Walk will again feature a food drive on behalf of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

At press time, New York City, Atlanta (GA), Nashville (TN) and Sacramento (CA) will be joining Pittsburgh in its World Zombie Day endeavor.

The schedule of activities and celebrity guests is being developed and details will be released as they become available. But Menold says to expect a “fun, carnival-like experience” over the course of the weekend. The undead like to have fun too.

For information regarding sponsorship, vendor/exhibitor rates and admissions, please email zombiefest@verizon.net.

World Zombie Day - 10/26/08

Add World Zombie Day (www.myspace.com/worldzombieday) as a friend and spread the infection!

In 1968 a film was released in Pittsburgh that changed the face of horror history forever. It changed zombies from mindless undead slaves into flesh-hungry beasts that thirst for blood! Film history would never be the same.

Now, 40 years later, some new blood is picking up the rotten pieces and upping the ante.

Pittsburgh’s greatest horror hit “The It’s Alive Show” is proud to present… WORLD ZOMBIE DAY – October 26, 2008.

World Zombie Day is the day that all ghouls from Kentucky to Kokomo, from Atlanta to Afghanistan, from Washington to Wales, and from Pittsburgh to Puerto Rico can celebrate together in a near orgy of blood covered bliss!!

Every major and minor city of the world that has ever hosted a zombie walk can band together and give one solid groan heard WORLDWIDE for the zombie cause!

RISE UP UNDEAD BROTHERS AND SISTERS!!!

NOW IS OUR TIME TO GROAN AND SHAMBLE FOR WORLD HUNGER!!

*World Zombie Day will be a day when all fans of zombie culture can join together. There will be an international charity event done throughout the cities involved to help alleviate world hunger, and this will be a first.

*”The It’s Alive Show”, World Record Holders for the largest zombie walk ever, will spearhead this event from the very birthplace of zombie culture, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.

*The participating living dead are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to each zombie walk starting point. A mass effort will be taken on worldwide to prove that charity, goodwill, and zombie love can flourish in every nation regardless of race, ethnicity, sex, or religion, and that no matter where or how we die…

WE WILL COME BACK!!!

Gross Movie Reviews 113
Gross Movie Reviews 113

By Tim Gross

Who has time to sleep? As a movie said once “sleep… little slices of death I do loathe.”

Scorcher (DVD/Sci-fi Channel) – A Sci-fi Channel presentation that stars the man that needs no introduction, Rutger Hauer, in another end of the world film unless the government does something. Problem, the movie is 10 pounds of donkey shit and Rutger Hauer is a four star actor! I averaged it out and give the movie 1 star.

Dirty Harry (DVD) – Before the Death Wish films and Chuck Bronson, there was Clint F’N Eastwood who just about invented the anti-hero in a film with his role as a ..:namespace prefix = st1 ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags” />San Francisco cop who doesn’t play by all the rules and pretty much kills all the bad guys. A classic film that had many rip offs and four sequels all worthy of talking about. The film is about an evil man who calls himself, Scorpio (Andrew [Hellraiser] Robinson) and sends letters to the police and media mocking them as he kills people with a high powered rifle! The film flawless and beautiful and still lots of fun to watch 36 years later! I give the movie 4 stars!

Forbidden Planet (DVD) – A science fiction film from 1956 about a scientist and his daughter who live on a planet all by themselves for the past twenty years discovering a culture of beings that were there thousands of years ago and have gone extinct. A US space crew searching for lost scientists from twenty years ago happens to find them by almost accident and find out they are far from being alone in the universe. The film is famous for three things: a) Leslie Neilson stars in the film; b) Robby the Robot (Lost in Space) is in the film; and c) the special effects for the sci-fi film were way ahead of its time. An excellent film for sci-fi fans if you never have seen it. The film has been released several times in the past few years on DVD including a 2-disc special with different artwork than the other DVDs and VHS copies. I give the film 3 ½ stars.

Them! (VHS) – Giant Fuckin ANTS in a desert from 1954! 3 ½ stars, go check it out!

Experiment (DVD) – A very weird British film about two people who are apart of a secret experiment to kill the prime minister. Problem is the experiment goes wrong and the two people slowly remember who they are and try to find out why they experimented on. Lots of twists and turns in the film with some pacing issues but a pretty cool science fiction film that I give 2 ½ stars and you can at www.mtivideo.com .The Return of Swamp Thing (DVD) – Yep, six years later they made a sequel to the campy Craven film that starred Dick Durock as Swamp Thing! And better yet it’s available on DVD… But anyhow instead of campy, filmmaker Jim Wynorski went for complete B-movie this time around with Swamp Thing driving a jeep, gets to bump uglies with the very and I mean very hot Heather Locklear (before Tommy Lee ruined her), and cracks jokes every other line. The plot is Louis Jourdan returns to his role of ‘Arcane’ trying to find a cure before he dies from his problems from the first film in the next several days. He is assisted by none other than one of the coolest actresses ever to grace the movie screen Sarah Douglas who in the same year starred in “Beastmaster 2: The Portal through Time” is trying to help him capture Swamp Thing who could hold the cure! A horrible film but fun to watch time after time… The DVD comes with commentary by Jim Wynorski, Trailer, TV Spots, and Public Service Announcements I remember seeing at the time the movie was released! I give this fine B-movie 3 stars.

The Hills Have Eyes 2 (DVD/Remake) – Where do you begin with this title? Is it a remake of the original sequel in 1985? Is it a straight sequel of the remake from two years ago and wouldn’t that make it number four? Or should the film been called “The Hills Have Eyes 3″ officially? Anyhow, the remake was a big pile of gory shit to me so I wasn’t holding out for anything good with the sequel, instead I get a film that picks right up after the remake and goes right into a kick ass, gory as fuck, straight forward horror film that goes right for your nads or taco (all depending who is reading)! This Craven produced film was a blessing in disguise of all the remake fallout from Hollywood the past several years. The film is about some National Guard members taking new generators out to a group of scientists and military men who don’t exist due to being a top secret project of getting rid of the mutants who still live in the desert where they live in abandoned mines. The area was a testing ground for the atom bomb and still under military use as Sector 16. The National Guard when arriving quickly finds out they are not alone and must fight for their lives of not being food or used mutant children. To me the film could have easily been made two years ago without the remake and could have been called “The Hills Have Eyes 3″, which horror fans were screaming to have for years but instead we got a shitty remake which filmed the first hour of the movie Gus Van Sant “Psycho” style! But anyhow Craven help redeem himself with this sequel that I consider a must watch and give 3 stars.

Nightmare (DVD-R) – The film is also called “Nightmares in a Damaged Brain” among several other names over the years as the film has the film has been bootlegged since its release in 1981. The film is a true slasher as a man who has been just released from the asylum makes a beeline for his wife to kill her. Along the way he has flashbacks of his childhood where he kills his mother who happens to be going for a ride on his daddy with an axe. Lots of blood and gore with Tom Savini as the make-up effects director are the highlights of this very downbeat slasher film. A must find for all gorehounds as I give the film 2 ½ stars.

It Came… Without Warning (DVD-R) – Martin Landau acting crazy because of aliens, Jack Palance being himself, and a young David Caruso all star in this serious film about aliens who happen to descend on a small country town to kill people of course. I give this hard to find alien invasion film 2 stars!
