Gross Movie Reviews #109
By Tim Gross

Hello horror movie fans, I didn’t think I would be writing anymore this year but I got bored and watched a bunch in a couple days just for the hell of it. So after this see you on the flip side of 2008 and as I will begin the journey to book number 4, as these reviews will wrap up book number 3. So read, enjoy, and have a good holiday!

Showdown at Area 51 (DVD/Sci-fi channel) – Another Sci-fi channel production that has two alien races pitted against each other trying to find this alien techno thing on earth. One alien trying to kill the earth, the other trying to save earth. Bad CG effects and bad over the top acting starring Jeremy London from “Dazed and Confused” are the highlights of this boring fight for earth. Do everybody a favor and pass over this one unless you are completely drunk then watch five minutes of it so can fall asleep. I give it ½ star.

Hellgate: The House That Screamed 2 (DVD) – It’s a sequel, but no relation to the 80s horror film “Hellgate”. Who would have guessed I would be reviewing a sequel? But anyhow one of my favorite filmmakers Jon “Woodchipper Massacre” McBride teams up with low budget filmmakers ‘The Polonia Brothers’ to make a micro budget film about a house that seems to be haunted and be the a gateway to hell. All who enter die or disappear. Well, some ‘Ghost Hunter’ types played by Jon McBride, one of the Polonia brothers, and Jeff Dylan Graham travel to the house to either debunk the theory of the house or found out if it is truly haunted. The movie has its moments with the low budget effects but its big highlight is the eye candy, “Leslie Culton” who you wish was in the whole film that plays one of the victims of the house. Take my word for it folks she makes the DVD worth seeking out. The film isn’t one of McBride’s best efforts but the informative interviews and extras make up for it as it is definite help guide for other micro budget filmmakers. I give Leslie 4 stars but the DVD 2 stars. You can find at www.b-movie.com .

Terror House (DVD) – Jon “Cannibal Campout” McBride and the Polonia Brothers are back together again to make a film about three college students stuck in a house with a half man half thing in the basement that is trying to kill them. Some low budget gore and the low budget effects make the film watchable but again the highlight is the extras on the DVD as they are very helpful for other micro budget filmmakers and anybody that is just interested in how to make an effective low budget horror film that can be sold to production companies. I give the DVD 2 stars and can be found at www.inspiredpictures.com .

Black Sheep (DVD) – A very funny New Zealand horror film about a farm where sheep are part of an experiment for the future for sheep farming. One brother is going too far with the scientific experiments and the other brother is just trying to stay alive and not be eaten by cannibal sheep. It has the usual spots in the film where you know a laugh is coming but the blood and gore is plentiful and beautiful to watch. The ending of the film of how they destroy the sheep had me laughing for 15 minutes after the film. Sorry fart jokes are funny. Well worth the rental fee as I give the DVD 3 stars.

Undead or Alive (DVD) – A zombie western starring Chris Kattan as a bumbling cowboy teamed up with a mysterious cowboy who seems to have everyone after for the money he is carrying. The film also stars the beautiful “Feast” star Navi Rawat. The film is about “the white man’s curse” which is a curse that turns the white people into zombies who have driven the Indians off their lands. Slowly many people are being eaten by or bitten by other zombies starting a zombie army. The film is interesting and somewhat funny but the ending and how the two cowboys get cured of “the white man’s curse” makes the film. I give the DVD 2 ½ stars.

Transformers (DVD) – A full length CG’d film of the popular 80s cartoon that has cars, planes, construction vehicles, able to transform into huge robots that talk and have the power to destroy buildings and anything else in its path. The story centers around a high school teenager who is just trying to make enough money to get a cool car and get the girl of his dreams but suddenly becomes the key to earth’s survival as he has glasses from his great grandfather that has the map of where the orb is located at that the Autobots and Decepticons are searching for. Being a huge fan of the 80s cartoon but never owning any of the toys seen the film as a fun mindless two hour action film. I have heard some grumblings from other “transformers” fans saying how crappy the film looked, but in my opinion I couldn’t see what other way to go with it than they did with the film. The film is lots of fun and non-stop and fun for the kids also as I give the DVD 3 ½ stars.

Flight of the Dead (DVD) – Flesh eating zombies on an airplane equals, a bloody fun b-movie, I give it 3 stars.

1408 (DVD) – The movie is adapted from a Steven King story and stars John Cusack as a writer who goes to all these haunted places and writes about scary they all are but knows none of them are haunted until he receives a postcard about room 1408 in a hotel in New York City. He visits the hotel and checks in to room 1408 knowing that no one has survived more than an hour. John not only finds out the room is haunted but finds something else he has been looking for since his daughter died. The film is scary and creepy at times but the film solely works because of John Cusack’s rare horror film performance. His acting is what carries the film and makes it effective and worth watching. Its one of the few Steven King books to movie adaptations worth watching these days. I give the DVD 3 ½ stars.

Gross Movie Reviews #108
By Tim Gross

The Pit (DVD) – A boy turning into a teenager has a strange love for his teacher, talks to his teddy bear which in returns tells him who to kill next, and has found this ‘Pit’ in the woods that has creatures that are possibly prehistoric and eat meat. You know typical boy stuff! The story focuses the first half of the film on the boy then the second half is about the boy basically feeding everyone he doesn’t like to these cool ass creatures! Descent film for the early 80s and an ending you know that is coming but a must own movie for any horror movie fan. I give the movie 3 stars and can be found on the ‘Drive-in theater double sided discs’ with the film “Hellgate”.

Hellgate (DVD) – Horshak from “Welcome Back Kotter” comes upon a ghost town where a woman ghost is trying to bang him on his way to a cabin where his friends are. The ghost town happens to be a place where this woman lures travelers to, so they can be killed. The film is weird and seems at times to be one fucked up mess of a movie from the mid-80s. As we got crazy ex-motorcycle gas attendant, an axe wielding spirit, ghost chick getting naked, zombies, mutant exploding turtles, mutant exploding fish, more nudity and sexual references. Movie seems to not know what exact direction it wanted to go but worth watching once as I give it 1 ½ stars. You can find it on the ‘Drive-in theater double sided discs” with the film “The Gate”.

The Day After Tomorrow (DVD) – A big budget blockbuster made a couple years ago about the world ending because of global warming and it was predicted by a scientist played by Dennis Quaid. Most of the film takes place in a CG’d New York City where Quaid’s son and others find themselves trapped in the library by a flood then extreme snow cold. Not one of my favorite ‘end of the world films’ but at least worth watching once. I give the movie 1 ½ stars.

The Lair of the White Worm (VHS) – A crazy UK cult film that has lots of blood, crazy special effects, a giant man eating worm, Hugh Grant, a sexy but crazy vampire temptress, nudity, a storyline not easy to follow which equals into a film that you don’t know what exactly you just watched right after you watched it. I give it 2 ½ stars.

Pumpkin (DVD) – An independent film that stars the very hot and tasty looking Christina Ricci as a ‘Paris Hilton’ type sorority girl who falls in love with a special needs man who she trying to help win the ‘special games’. The humor is sometimes politically incorrect and funny as hell but having two special needs kids myself I found this film entertaining and well made and worth seeking out. I give it 3 stars.

Eye of the Beast (DVD/Sci-fi Channel) – James Vander Beek or how ever you spell his fucking name… Who? Dawson from “Dawson’s Creek” in his third horror movie in three years plays a guy studying why all the fish have disappeared from this fishing village and instead finds a giant squid eating everyone! I give it 2 stars.

Inbred Redneck Alien Abduction (DVD) – One of the funniest fucked up movies I have ever had the pleasure of watching. The men in black go to investigate UFO sightings in the middle of no where but find rednecks that have been shooting at spaceships. These really cool looking small budget aliens are beaming to earth to abduct the redneck women and have sex with them with extremely long green penises! The movie is all about being a very politically incorrect film and enjoying it with whether it’s the cool looking alien banging the chubby redneck woman or the woman of the men in black trying to getting it on with a redneck who’s bent on fucking watermelons. This small budgeted film is worth seeing just for the aliens! I give this film 3 stars and can be found at www.b-movie.com .

Santo & Blue Demon vs. Dr. Frankenstein (DVD) – Santo and the Blue Demon who are Mexican wrestlers must save a woman friend who has been targeted by Dr. Frankenstein who is trying to save his wife by killing other women. Plus, Santo and Blue Demon must fight a huge zombie guy who is controlled by Dr. Frankenstein. I give the DVD 3 stars.

Psycho Santa (DVD) – A stupid ass movie about a man telling his wife about a legend of a man dressed as Santa Claus killing people out in this remote area that they are driving through. For the most part the movie is about two women: stripper girl and piercing girl who shower, drink, play X-mas games for extended, boring, eye gouging periods of time. Now you do get to see some full frontal nudity but not worth it in the long run as it lacks gore, and anything else worth watching except for piercing girl having piercings where you never knew you could have a piercing. But anyhow the movie sucked balls and I give ½ star and can be found on the same disc with “Satan Claus” and can be found at www.b-movie.com .

Satan Claus (DVD) – A crazed Santa is out killing everyone and taking body parts to decorate his tree. Santa also mocks the detective that is trying to catch him after Santa has killed his wife and has taken her head to be his tree topper! But this movie has everything any horror fan would want in a killer Santa movie. You have Santa crank calling the detective, a scene where people are lynching the wrong person dressed as Santa, Santa decorating his tree with body parts, lots of gore, a Scooby-Doo type of ending, and possibly could be the most famous line in a movie ever: After the police detective finds out his wife was hacked up the killer Santa he says, “Fuck… Fuck, Shit, Fuck!!!!” With shit like that how can’t you want to watch this with the whole family every Christmas?! I give the low budget flick 3 ½ stars and is on the same disc as “Psycho Santa” and can be found at www.b-movie.com .

Any comments or questions please send to: LAN_EMAIL_SUBS or www.myspace.com/slasherfilmfan . Also you can purchase my two horror movie review books, “Gross Movie Reviews Volume One and Two” at www.lulu.com or www.amazon.com . More bad news for Fangoria: Fire destroys back issues

Fire wipes out company’s back issues

It looks like 2007 just isn’t Fangoria’s year.

The venerable horror publisher has to hope 2008 turns out better. Earlier this year, the publisher discontinued its series of horror comics. That’s not so unusual. Comics companies come and go. But Fangoria only gave its comics division a few months before dumping it.

Then earlier this week, the publisher suffered more bad news: A fire roared through an Oregon, Ill., warehouse destroying loads of Fangoria back issues in the process. The issues were used to fulfill mail and online orders. The flames, according to www.fangoria.com, also destroyed back issues of Starlog, Star Trek and all of the company’s movie tie-in titles. This means that Fangoria will no longer be able to provide back-issue orders for any of the company’s past titles.
If you need that Fangoria issue from December of 2005, then, I suppose you’re out of luck.

The fire, by the way, was no small blaze. The blaze erupted after a forklift driver punctured a gas line located close to a space heater. According to Fangoria, more than 100 firefighters from 20 departments arrived to help douse the flames. Fortunately, none of the 20 Fangoria employees in the building were hurt.

So, if you think you had a bad 2007, take heart: It probably wasn’t as miserable as the year Fangoria has been having. (And there’s still a few weeks left before the calendar turns!)

We’ll be talking about everything from his early effects work, (”Re-Animator”, “From Beyond”) to his forays into writing/directing (”Troll”, “Friday the 13th pt. 7: A New Blood”), with tons of creature creations and splatter abominations thrown in for good measure. We’ll be burning our yule logs into the wee hours with tons of new DVD reviews including Raw Feed’s doomsday cult cut “Believers”, Lionsgate reaching a new “Lowe” with “Stir of Echoes 2: The Homecoming”, Low Budget Picture’s matinee of maniacal merriment entitled “Film Crew”, the short film noir exclamation “Kiss Your Ass Goodbye”, and Anchor Bay’s legendary reissue of an independent classic “Evil Dead: The Ultimate Edition”. Touch too much…well, maybe, but we’ve also got holiday horror talk, new video reviews, and all the season’s beatings that can be dished out…only on www.Deadpit.com

My Uncle Fred

Posted by Charlie on December 10, 2007

My Uncle Fred passed away about three hours before I wrote this. He had been fighting cancer for a better part of 2007. Please let me tell you about my Uncle Fred:

My Uncle Fred was in the Army before I was born.

My Uncle Fred was the supervisor of a plant that made fire engines, some of which were on the T.V show Emeregncy. I always thought that was cool.

My Uncle Fred and Aunt Kate own a laundromat. He used to give me free pop from the pop machine when I was a kid. I always thought that was cool too.

My Uncle Fred taught me the greatest joke of all time: “Guess what?” “What?”"That’s what.”

My Uncle Fred also taught me the greatest poem of all time: ” I’m Popeye the sailor Man, I live in a garbage can, Oh I’m goin’ swimmin’ with bow-legged women, I’m Popeye the Sailor Man!”

My Uncle Fred used to take my kids and let them sit on John Deere’s at the Troy Fair. They thought that was cool.

My Uncle Fred did a lot for other people and didn’t ask for anything in return.

My Uncle Fred was loved by a lot of people in return.

I love my Uncle Fred, as my family does too. We’re going to miss you.
