This is a short list, see you at Cinema Wasteland!
The Dead One (DVD) – The film stars Wilmer Valderrama aka the ‘foreign kid’ as the character Red, called him on “That 70s Showâ€. Well Wilmer, dies on his way to a ‘Day of the Dead’ party but doesn’t know he is dead until he shows up at the party a year later and there is tribute to him at the party. His love for his girlfriend is what keeps him going but with him coming back from the dead has its consequences … like the end of the world according some Aztec legend. For the most part it’s like the Spanish version of “The Crow†but without him dying in real life on the film set. The film is pretty decent until the end where it goes completely the way of “The Crowâ€. The DVD has some extras, an appearance by Billy Drago and pretty much worth the rent I give it 2 ½ stars and you can find at www.echobridge.com .
Chicago Massacre/Richard F. Speck (DVD) – An excellent movie based on the true story of Richard Speck who raped and murdered 8 nurses in a nurse’s dorm back in the 50s. The film stars Corin Nemac or Parker Lewis as Richard Speck, Andrew Divoff and Tony Todd as two detectives who were searching for him after the murders and Debbie Rochon in a brief but pivotal appearance. According to the film the murder spree wasn’t just the bad part, the story of how Richard avoided being arrested for months is. An excellent serial killer film and not a movie for the kiddies to watch. The DVD has lots of extras and a must buy, I give it 4 stars.
Reeker (DVD) – College kids traveling the highway to a concert get sidetrack when they decide to let a man who has drugs with him and what no part of it. Problem, when they come back to a diner/motel they were just at no one is there and mysterious things begin to happen to the college kids. The film seems like a slasher at first but eventually turns into a modern day “Tales from the Crypt†tale. The film also has genre veteran ‘Michael Ironside’ and the man best known for being in “Crow 3†aka Eric Mabius! I give the DVD 2 ½ stars.
Zombietown (DVD) – A big low budget mess that rips off “Night of the Creeps†with lots of gore, blood, and zombies and it is fucking fun as hell to watch! Hell how could you not enjoy a movie that has the line, “Zombie Grandmothers?†I give it 3 ½ stars and you can find it at www.mtivideo.com .
Do You Like Hitchcock? (DVD) – A recent film from the horror legend ‘Dario Argento’ who incorporates some of Hitchcock’s best films mixed together into a modern day thriller. Not some of his best stuff but above par compared to most hacks in the horror genre, I give the DVD 2 ½ stars.
Species: The Awakening (DVD/Sci-Fi Channel) – If you are keeping track at home this is part four of the series as they have gone completely away from the original alien hybrid “EVE†storyline and try a different direction. Well, it was the wrong fucking direction but if you can get past that and like lots of boobies and booty, you’ll enjoy this turd… especially the unrated edition! I give it ½ star.
