Gross Movie Reviews #104
By Tim Gross

Fallout from Cinema Wasteland Part 2

The Deviants (DVD) – A low budget sick and twisted film that in the end seem to make a statement against cloning of all things in the end. Two college students (boy and a girl) who are twins seem to have a sick thing for killing their friends and eating them with no remorse. A detective who has been tracking them for quite awhile now, knows what they are doing but can never catch them red handed and what exposes the twins is their pet project of cloning when they get involved with a black market deal for harvesting organs. The film has its flaws, but the gore and this weird storyline of cloning that is the subplot of the film is what keeps the film from getting boring and just another worthless low budget picture. I give it 2 ½ stars and you can find at www.srscinema.com .

Rapturious (DVD) – A horror film from one the ‘Jerky Boys’ Kamal Ahmed, that stars independent film legend Debbie Rochon and drive-in movie critic Joe Bob Briggs in tale of an underground rapper who gets a hold of a new drug on the street called, “After Life”. The rapper takes some and his mind goes crazy as he dreams about killing people, Satan, and a few other fucked up things. The film begins great but it doesn’t take you long to make the connection and know how it ends within the first 15 minutes. The film plays out more like an overextended episode of “Tales from the Crypt” that should of quit while it was ahead or went into a different direction with the film. I give it 1 ½ stars.

30 Days of Night (Theater) – Vampires, blood, gore, no feeling, and no hope… This is what describes one of the best vampire films to be made in a long time. The movie does not stray to far from the Steve Niles classic comic book of the same title. An Alaskan town named ‘Barrow’ goes dark for 30 days and its residents prepare for this isolation every year as they are above the Artic Circle in a cold and cruel place. But this year is different, as the young sheriff Josh Hartnett knows something is weird when he finds all the town’s cell phones burned and destroyed outside of town and all the town’s sled dogs killed in a vicious way before the last sunset for the next 30 days. The sheriff arrests a stranger who comes with a warning, “they are coming”… When the lights in the town go out, all hell breaks loose as the townspeople become food for the creatures of the night! To top this awesome carnage of a film the ending is very downbeat and keep the comic book geeks wondering if they will continue the story through film as they did through the comic books. So if you are tired of the goodie, goodie vampires you see on TV, you have found the right film here as one main vampire character says in the trailer and film before he has one of minions completely destroy a resident of Barrow, Alaska, he says in a serious tone, “No…God!” I give it 4 stars so go support it!

The Evil Offspring (DVD) – From the same people who gave horror fans the horrible film “Mr. Jingles” and the movie with some very cool creatures in it “They Must Eat” are back with a fun filled flick with monstrous creatures that kill and are taken care of by two redneck farmers. The farmers are vague on what exactly is going on but you get the drift of the movie as people get lost and eventually become food or something worse… The creature is the highlight once again of the film. I give it 2 ½ stars and you can find out more about it at www.theskeletonfactory.com .

Horror Hotel (VHS) – An oldie but goodie black and white flick about a woman doing a paper on witchcraft who stops over in a very old town with a history of witchcraft and disappears. A classic B-movie worth finding as I give it 3 stars.

Scooby Doo and the Legend of the Vampire (DVD) – Another feature length cartoon film featuring the Scooby gang at a rock-n-roll festival where bands are disappearing one by one and it’s up to the Scooby gang again to solve the mystery. I give it 2 stars, sorry it’s just not as fun as 70s TV show where they would meet Batman, the Three Stooges, and even Vincent Price!

The Remake (DVD) – The filmmakers that produced “Mr. Jingles”, “The Evil Offspring”, and “They Must Eat” give horror fans a low budget film that many horror fans should like as it’s a film about a small cast and crew set out to remake a classic horror film from 25 years ago all for the money! The film is well casted and acted and features some cool music but the fun starts when a mysterious man decides to take it upon himself to kill anyone that has anything to do with the remaking of the classic horror film! Lots of blood, gore, boobs, and an ending that makes the movie worth watching alone as you have to see to understand what some horror movie fans feel! I give this fun slasher flick 3 stars and you can find more about it at www.theskeletonfactory.com .

M.A.R.K-13 aka Hardware [Red Edition] (DVD) – A very dark and grim future for this science fiction/thriller that stars Dylan McDermott as military man who brings parts of a droid to his girlfriend who loves mechanical things. After tinkering with the droid parts it revives itself and begins to put itself back together to kill and cause chaos to whomever tries to enter the loft! Awesome industrial music, a couple great gore scenes that includes a man being cut in half by security doors, a fat stalker that meets a very, very bad demise, and appearances by music legends Iggy Pop and Lemmy of Motorhead! The region 2 disc features a commentary, trailer, alternative covers, and an interview with Richard Stanley in French, and a couple of deleted scenes. A must have for the hardcore fans as I give it 3 ½ stars.

Award Ceremony Recap! Congratulations to all of our winners!

Posted by Tim on October 17, 2007

The 2007 Eerie Horror Film Festival Award Ceremony was a star studded affair honoring the best of the best of this year’s film, screenplay and video game selections.

Moderated by Eerie Horror Film Festival President Greg Ropp and Vice President Mark Steensland, the winners were announced by celebrity guests Dee Wallace Stone (”Cujo”, “The Howling”, “E.T.”), Tom Savini (”Grindhouse”, “From Dusk Till Dawn”), Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick (”The Omen” 2006) and Joe Pilato (”Day of the Dead”).

Tom Savini, a living legend in the horror genre and Pennsylvania resident, was presented with a special award from the City of Erie as well - A Proclamation from the Mayor, recognizing his lifetime of achievements in film and special effects. Tom seemed truly stunned by the honor.

Directors Jason McCann and Jason Hull were inducted into the Eerie Horror Filmmakers Hall of Fame, which was created to honor and to draw attention to our regional filmmakers.

Dave and Melissa Bostaph were presented with our annual Evil Bunny Award (don’t ask) for their incredible job of managing the Festival this season.

Sincere thanks were also given to EHFF board members, staff and the dozens of volunteers for their time, dedication and tireless efforts to make this Festival what it is.

This season’s event far exceeded the expectations of the organizers with sold out shows and record breaking attendance. (Rough estimates of over 5,000 attendees).

Gross Movie Reviews #103
By Tim Gross

Welcome to the fallout of Wasteland!

Holy Shit… Zombies [HSZ]: rough cut (DVD) – Two words for you: ‘fake vagina’ … Any other time I would have left the review like that and moved on. But I have become a huge fan of Rick and company at DSK Productions and also since this is the official sequel to “Toxic Shock Zombies” I must tell you more. “Holy Shit” picks up with the president of ‘Zampons’ explaining the whole zombie plague caused by ‘Zampons’ was basically bullshit. After his whole intro of going into detail he demonstrates by putting a ‘Zampon’ in his ass, spits out blood, and then becomes a zombie. The film goes roaring downhill from there in a great way. Rick chooses again to cross every line that has never been crossed with such examples as: redneck hunters checking out a boil on one of their nutsacks, a male zombie eating his girlfriend out when she is on her period, and also a pregnant woman who is a zombie gets hit in the stomach with a sledgehammer (rubber sledgehammer) and she drops the kid and continues to try to eat flesh with the baby hanging off of her! If you are any fan of such films “Hot Justice” or “Toxic Shock Zombies”, “Holy Shit… Zombies” will not disappoint. Now remember it is a rough cut, missing music, needs some edits still, along with needing credits, but has lots of blood and guts, dick jokes, male on male touching, I give it 3 ½ stars as you need to go buy it at www.dsk-productions.com .

Dark Ride (DVD) – A throwback slasher film that seems to be heavily influence by Tobe Hooper’s “Funhouse” and stars Jamie Lynn Cigular and that red head kid from “The Sandlot”. Pretty descent gore effects and well-paced with an ending that just ends when you are waiting for about five more minutes of horror fun. I give it 3 stars.

Rock & Roll Eulogy (DVD) – Horror hosts ‘Tarr & Fether’ bring us a modern day educational film shot in black and white about how rock and roll is Satan’s work and how it is bad for you! Great film that takes you back to the grade school days when they showed those funny ass corny films on sex education, school, emergencies, etc. I give it 3 ½ stars and you can find at www.rockandrolleulogy.com .

The Curse of La Llorona (DVD) – A little girl witnesses the demise of her parents in a house that is supposedly possessed by a Mexican evil spirit. The girl becomes possessed when her relatives show up to take care of her. Sounded good at first but didn’t translate well into a low budget production. I give it 1 star and you can find at www.srscinema.com .

Kiss Daddy Goodbye (DVD) – A lost early 80s film just recently released by SRS Cinema that stars Marilyn Burns as a teacher to two home schooled children at a home in the mountains of a small coastal town. The problem is no one knows the horror they have unleashed when their father is killed by some bikers on their property. We eventually found out the kids have special unexplained powers and are very smart… They raise their dead father from the grave to kill anyone that crosses them. He drives them to the beach, home, anywhere they want to go. This is a cool classic film that reminds you of how cool horror movies were in the 80s, I give it 3 stars.

Splatter Movie: The Director’s Cut [rough cut] (DVD-R) – Mike Watt and Amy Lynn Best are back with their latest project which is a movie within a movie within a documentary movie sort of… It’s confusing and been done before but here we go… A disgruntled cast member takes it upon himself or herself to start killing cast members off left and right in a great gory and bloody fashion while the film is being shot. The location is one reason that makes this film appealing as Mike and Amy used the location “Hundred Acres Manor” a horror attraction in Pittsburgh, Pa., to its fullest. Second reason is the film also has appearances from independent film legend Debbie Rochon and “Evil Dead” FX artist Tom Sullivan in which Tom steals the movie and makes this film well worth watching through the confusion and keeping track of everything going on. Again the film is a rough cut and it is very easy to see where they still have to make edits, add music, and a few other things. Once the film is finished I have a feeling this could be one the best films for Happy Cloud Pictures too date! I give it 3 ½ stars and you can find more info on it at www.myspace.com/splattermovie .

The Period (DVD) – Let me just say this, “This has to be the weirdest DVD I have ever been given to review”. A girl has her period and it does not stop. She loses her lesbian girlfriend, she loses her art modeling job because of her period shooting on everyone, she lives on the street for awhile, gets picked up by an art agent to use her period blood for art, and she eventually finds herself bald, naked, and being worship by some ugly/fat/naked/white male/amazons! The film is possibly the trippiest borderline porn film I ever watched. Personally, I think the film runs a little long (100 minutes) but I know this film will find an audience out there whether its people who like art films or just old, bald, fat fuckers who just wanna jack off to it. I give it 2 ½ stars and it has lots of extras and you can find it at www.srscinema.com .

Curtains (DVD) – A long lost early 80s slasher that hasn’t been released on DVD in the U.S. and it stars John Vernon who is known for his legendary roles in “Animal House” and “Killer Klowns From Outer Space”. John Vernon plays a director who is hard to work with and has asked six actresses out to his home to audition for a legendary role! Of course the six actresses begin to die in bloody fashion one by one with a storyline that gives you a little twist at the end that makes you wanna pay attention throughout the slasher film. This classic slasher film deserves a U.S. release and is talked about a lot on Dead Pit Radio among other known horror websites and magazines. A must find for all slasher film fans as I give it 3 stars.

Any comments or questions please send to: LAN_EMAIL_SUBS or www.myspace.com/slasherfilmfan , plus you can also find my two horror movie review books, “Gross Movie Reviews Volume One and Two” for sale at www.lulu.com or www.amazon.com . Cinema Wasteland 2007 Fall Show review

Cinema Wasteland 2007 Fall Show

Well I’m back! Got to hang out with quite a few Dead Pit board members (El Juan, Russ, Rick, darkpumpkin, the man wearing girls pants “must be there to understand”) and had a few beers and talked horror. But overall the show was very weird for a Cinema Wasteland show. First off, Chiller was running a show the same weekend which was very weird since some of the same vendors and people go to both but were forced by Chiller to pick one this time around. Did this cause the weirdness? Second, Cleveland Indians are in the playoffs and the convention is in the heartland of Cleveland Indian country. Did this cause the weirdness? Third, it was 87 degrees outside and sunny which for October is down right fucking crazy! Lots of factors to think about that made this show weird. But all the men who played Michael Myers showed up except for Brad Loree and William Forsythe, and Leslie Easterbrook were the guests along with the fun usuals who show up to one of the coolest conventions around. Business was a little slow book wise, and overall for all vendors there but that didn’t stop the fun partying going on there after hours whether it was me seeing nice bare breasts three times in one day or the horror geek drunken chat that took place in the hallway between several of us fellow vendors, guests, and people who attended the show. Overall, Cinema Wasteland was weird as hell but the spring show is shaping up to be a legendary show!
