Gross Movie Reviews #87
By Tim Gross
More horror movies, more crap, buckle up… for more reviews!
Backwoods (DVD-R) – A film from Robert Elkins who tells a story about a group of friends who get together to go to a cemetery and get lost. They knock on the wrong door for help and they begin to die one by one by the hands of a killer who seems to have no feelings. “Backwoods†seems to be a throwback to the early to mid 80s slashers as it reminds me of “Friday the 13th Part 2, The Burning, and Cannibal Campoutâ€. The film is creepy at times, intense, and also well paced as lack of budget is made up for by making it a great throwback slasher flick that I would love to see if it had more money in the budget. This film is one my favorite micro budget slashers of all time and a good choice if you are picky about your independent horror movies. And to keep the formula of slasher films going a couple die brutally when begin to have sex. I only can hope that Elkins gets more money for future projects as “Backwoods†proves to be another classic horror fans must buy! I give it 3 ½ stars and you can find it at www.filmbaby.com or www.myspace.com/backwoodsthemovie .
Lake Placid 2 (DVD/Sci-fi Channel) – Luke Duke plays the sheriff this time around of the small town in Maine that still happens to have giant crocs eating people. Bad humor, no blood, and bad CGI are the mean features of this bad sequel. I give the film 1 star.
Paradise Alley (VHS) – Sly Stallone writes, directs, and acts in this film about three brothers in the 40s that turn to professional wrestling to make money. I give it 2 stars for the cheese!
The Gravedancers (DVD) – The filmmaker that gave us “The Convent†is back to give us a tale about three people who get drunk and dance on some graves after reading a mysterious letter. Well, it happens the letter raises the spirits of the graves they danced on only to haunt them for the next month leading up to their deaths. The movie is intense and lots of fun to watch, I give it 3 ½ stars.
Don’t Answer the Phone (DVD) – A sick and twisted film that seems to run on all cylinders downhill as there is no upbeat scenes as Nicholas Worth plays a killer/rapist of random women and calls into a radio show he listens to after he makes his last kill. There is no sign of happiness in this film as it just plays out as balls to the walls creepy and dark film! I give it 3 stars.
The Prowler (DVD) – A film made in 1980 during the slasher film age that is known more for Tom Savini’s effects than the movie itself. A killer is back 35 years later when the “Graduation Dance†is on again after a horrible slaying of a couple in 1945. Lots blood and gore are the main stars of this slasher film and the DVD is a must buy! I give the DVD 3 ½ stars.
Spider-man 3 (Theater) – This time around Peter Parker must decide if it is time to marry MJ or not as he deals with new villains ‘The Sandman’, ‘The New Green Goblin’, himself, and eventually ‘Venom’. The film was good but not great as the first two films. The film is more about relationships than anything else but I personally think if the relationship thing wasn’t a part of the film we have another “Batman Forever†which would have been bad news for Sam Raimi and friends! The black costume was awesome but just not enough to top two nearly perfect superhero films that came before it! I give it 3 stars.
Nighthawks (VHS) – Sly Stallone plays a NY cop who has to try to capture or kill a terrorist (Rutger Hauer) who happens to be the worst of the worst as he has no value for life when he arrives in New York from London. I give it 2 ½ stars.
Creature Unknown (DVD) – First off, the film stars a very delicious Chase Masterson and the cute blonde Maggie Grace from the first two seasons of “Lost†but that is where the good things about this sci-fi/horror film ends as it is unbearable piece of donkey shit about a brother who is supposedly killed in the woods after a prom party and the kids get back together four years later after the brother is killed. Lacks action, lacks worthwhile T & A and worse yet seems to have little blood during the kill scenes. I give it a ½ star.
