Brain Damage Films to release Awaken The Dead!

Posted by Charlie on April 30, 2007

AWAKEN THE DEAD challenges the low budget horror stereotype with a larger than life story fit for the big screen but aiming for the small one. Writer/Director Jeff Brookshire pays homage to Sergio Leone, Ridley Scott and Stanley Kubrick with this espionage drama set in a world of the undead. A die hard supporter of indie film and indie music, Brookshire gives us some talented up and coming actors and showcases talented indie bands from across the world.

Synopsis: Christopher is a professional killer on the government‘s payroll, until his conscience turns him away from his wet work and into a life in the priesthood. He turns his back on the violence and struggles for an elusive peace. He almost has it.

Until a mysterious red envelope pulls him back. Back to a safe house that becomes a deathtrap as a mysterious virus transforms the world around him into a nightmare of the living dead. Together with a feisty recluse named Mary and Stanley, a nervous Jehovah’s Witness, he must unravel the clues to this great conspiracy if he hopes to survive.

Sometimes the path to redemption leads through the gates of hell.

This apocalyptic tale also involves a massive pimp named Grin, two not so innocent Asian Schoolgirls, a retired ex-marine named Nick and his timid wife Michelle, an innocent bystander named Delilah , an omnipresent watcher in black and the omniscient Jeremiah.

Fate and human machinations tie them all together in a downward spiral of deception and violence. Violence that teaches the world to fear the wrath of a peaceful man.

Filled with action, laughter and more than its share of humanity, AWAKEN THE DEAD crosses genres to bring you a universal tale of horror and action. AWAKEN THE DEAD is also a redemption tale about two lost souls who are dead to the world until the demons without force them to confront the demons within.

Brain Damage Films has picked up worldwide distribution for the film with a release date to be set for later in 2007. AWAKEN THE DEAD information is updated regularly at: www.awakenthedeadthemovie.com and

Gross Movie Reviews #86

Gross Movie Reviews # 86
By Tim Gross

Machined (DVD) – What can I say about this big bag of dog shit? It sucked ass, I would rather have watched “Driving Miss Daisy” compared to this piece of donkey shit. But anyhow, the movie is about some dumb fat ass bastard runs down some guy who breaks down in the middle of the desert. The guy lives but ‘fat bastard’ takes him home and turns him into somekind of killing machine, yes you read that correctly… A little T & A action here and there, some murders and you got another Lionsgate classic piece of elephant shit that is not worthy of sitting on anyone’s respectable DVD shelves at home. I give it nothing because it sucked royally!

Blood Ranch (DVD) – Now, watching this and thinking about it, any reviewer can just shit all over this movie but I choose to think about the movie for a little while and it has grown on me. The movie pretty much plays out like a “House of 1000 Corpses” or Skinned Deep” on a very low budget. If you liked those two films you’ll like this cheaper version of them also. I give it 2 ½ stars.

Android Apocalypse (DVD) – The film stars wrestler Chris Jericho and Joey Lawerence! Yes, that Joey… I don’t blame you if you stay away from this film just because the hooky cover or that Joey is in it. But I decided to give it a chance just because and glad I did. It reminds me a lot of a Charles Band Empire Pictures production from the early 80s and those were lots of fun. The Final World War has happened and gone and humans are scarce. It is up to Androids the last humans built to protect them and work for them. Problem, the androids want to take over, (yeah I know you seen this one “Terminator”) but a glitch in one (Joey) might be the difference between humans dying off forever and him helping an escaped convict save his wife! It’s cheesy, corny, but lots of fun as I said it plays out like a 80s throwback Band film. I give the DVD 3 stars.

Hot Fuzz (Theater) – The “Shaun of the Dead” crew are in another flick that pays homage to action films, good and bad. Simon Pegg plays the ultimate cop who gets transferred from London to small village where nothing happens until bodies begin to pile up after he gets there. Lots of lines and scenes ripped from ‘Point Break’, ‘Bad Boys’, and ‘Lethal Weapon’. A very funny movie and if you were a fan of “Shaun” you’ll also love this. The movie also does not disappoint in gore even though its an action/comedy. I give the film 3 ½ stars.

Jaws 3 (VHS) – The killer shark is back and no it this it isn’t personal, that is the next sequel. But Dennis Quaid stars as he and Louis Gossett Jr. capture a baby ‘great white’ and pretty much kill it which of course pisses off its mom! What separates this sequel from the others is it is in 3-D! I give it 3 stars for its cheese factor.

Murder Mix Tape (DVD-R) – An anthology created by Nathan Elias and John Gallagher III on a very micro budget and pretty much bored the living shit out of me! The only redeeming value of the DVD is the TV hosts who talk in-between segments, “Tarr and Fether”. I hope this was their first efforts as it looks like because the only thing they can do is get better. I give the DVD 0 stars, but the hosts get 3 stars.

Pathogen (DVD) – The much talked about zombie flick in a recent Rue Morgue magazine made by Emily M. Hagins, who just happens to be 13 years olds when she made the film. The film starts of slow but lives up to the hype mostly as the zombie flick progresses. It has its share of blood, but lack of budget and being 13 has its limits I guess? The film is about an infection that happens to be in the water supply after a janitor mishap. People who drink the water become sick and then zombies eventually. But it becomes clear to a 14 year old girl to not drink the water when she keeps having dreams about strange things happening when the water is drank. The downbeat ending is something I wasn’t expecting and perfect to a first feature for a girl who is barely in high school! The film has lots of flaws but Emily did prove one thing she can make a horror movie and a horror film that is above average compared to most micro-budget zombie films. I look forward to her next horror film with eyes open wide as she is very young but seems to have the talent to go places in filmmaking. I give it 2 ½ stars. You can find the film and purchase it at www.cheesynuggets.com .

Wolfster Part 2: The Wrath of the Egyptian Mummy from Egypt (DVD) – The first film was lots of fun and part two does not disappoint. Steve Rudzinski pretty much does everything for the film including lead actor (Wolfster) with some help from the fast becoming busiest man in independent film, Henrique Couto. This time around, Wolfster is older, wiser, and has learned to use his powers for good and doesn’t have to deal with any Emo-vamp bitches! But a powerful mummy comes looking for the Wolfster and Wolfster is in need of help from the King of Vamps! When the Wolfster isn’t bickering with Drac about flushing the toilet he is still talking to the viewer as he did in the first film about his problems and what he needs to do. Steve does an excellent job again and understands that not all great micro budget films need to be feature length as it runs a fast-paced 36 minutes and has commentaries, bloopers, and other extras on the DVD which is now sold in a combo pack with the first film. Which is a perfect combo for any fan of micro budget filmmaking as Steve understands success is to not take yourself or your film too serious. With the promise of a saga of Wolfster as talked about in the movie I give the film 3 ½ stars and look forward to future Wolfster films! You can purchase a copy of the film at www.darkmulletcinema.net .

Help out a very talented female filmmaker Michelle Fatale!!!!

Posted by Tim on April 21, 2007

(She is Bastards of Horror approved)
Cast and Crew Call for a Michelle Fatale film

Hello!

I’m currently looking for cast and crew to participate in my new short film “The Cleaner.” It is being launched through my new production company Chopping Block Films (choppingblockfilms.com). It is a horror film revolving around the main character Grace who struggles with Obsessive Compulsion Disorder. After a series of unfortunate events, Grace realizes she needs to rid the world of all of it’s dirt. Without giving away the entire concept, this is a very character driven film and is extremely dark and disturbing.

It will be entered in the upcoming After Dark contest (Horrorfest) for the 5 best short films that will be showcased nationwide if selected. In addition to that it’ll be submitted to several other films festivals all over the country.

We are shooting on May 11th (Friday) - May 14th (Monday). The shoot will be in and around the south bay area of CA. You must be willing to travel because unfortunately the locations (still pending) could potentially be far apart so transportation is necessary.

This is an unpaid gig. You will receive food, credit, a copy, and a lot of beer when we wrap this thing up. I am looking for the following:

CREW

Camera Operator
Art director
Gaffer
Grips
PAs

CAST
(Don’t necessarily have to fall within the age range, just as long as you can pull it off)

Ben, Grace’s husband - Male, 25-30
Grace’s Boss - Male, 35-45
Doctor - 35-55
Vicki - Female, early 20’s
Paul (Vicki’s co-worker) - Male, 20-30

LOCATIONS NEEDED - Any help in securing a location in the area would be greatly appreciated!

Office (Cublicles, call center)
Hospital Room
Bar

Please email me at LAN_EMAIL_SUBS if you’re interested, or message me here on myspace. If you have a headshot, reel, resume, IMDB page, please send the info.

Thanks for your time!

Rob Zombie takes time to answer a few questions on his "Halloween Myspace page"

Posted by Tim on April 21, 2007

Here are a few answers to your questions.

IS JAMIE LEE CURTIS GOING TO POP UP IN IT SOMEWHERE EITHER AS A CAMEO OR A SMALL ROLE?

No, Jamie Lee Curtis does not appear in the film. Obviously I think she is great, but I also thought her presence would break the reality of this new film.

DOES JOHN CARPENTER HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE NEW MOVIE?

No, other than wishing me well with the project John does not have any involvement.

INSTEAD OF HAVING DANIELLE HARRIS PLAY ANNIE WAS THERE ANY THOUGHT OF HAVING HER PLAY LAURIE?

No, Danielle never wanted to play Laurie. She has always been a fan of the original Annie character and wanted to create the new Annie.

HOW MUCH, IF ANY, CGI WAS USED IN THE FILM MAKING PROCESS?

There are no CGI effects used in this film at all. Everything is an “old school” style gag.

I KNOW THAT CLOCKWORK ORANGE IS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE MOVIES. HOW DID YOU APPROACH MALCOLM MCDOWELL AND WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO WORK WITH HIM?

I am a huge fan of Malcolm and yes A Clockwork Orange is my favorite film. Malcolm was a total blast to work with. He gave a 100% everyday and has created a fresh version of Loomis that is going to blow you guys away. We really get to know Loomis and follow his journey.

HOW HAS THE INSTANT FEEDBACK OF FORUMS, SUCH AS MYSPACE OR MESSAGE BOARDS IN GENERAL, INFLUENCED YOU AS A DIRECTOR? DO THE LIKES OR THE DISLIKES OF YOUR FANBASE INFLUENCED YOUR DECISIONS?

No, as a director you have to hold strong your vision. That is the only way something special can happen. “Too many cooks in the kitchen” is a recipe for disaster. I love the fans, but unfortunately the fans are usually basing their opinions on rumors and false information spread on-line.

I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU FILMED ON SOME OF THE SAME STREETS AS THE ORIGINAL; WILL ANY OF THE HOUSES FROM THE ORIGINAL APPEAR IN YOUR FILM AT ALL?

Yes, I filmed in Pasadena in and around some of the same locations. In a few scenes you can see some of the famous houses in the background.

DID YOU GET TO WORK WITH ANY OTHER FOLKS WHO WORKED ON THE ORIGINAL HALLOWEEN? HOW CONSCIOUS ARE YOU WITH REGARD TO RECREATING HOW THE MOVIE IS PHOTOGRAPHED?

No, I didn’t speak to anyone. As far as the photography I didn’t try to recreate the look of the original. This movie has to stand as a fresh film not a copy.

ANY PLANS FOR SEQUELS? WHERE WOULD YOU WANT TO TAKE THE FRANCHISE?

I’m sure if the movie does well they will make a sequel. I have no plans to be involved.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE HALLOWEEN TO RE-CREATE? THERE WERE SO MANY OTHER FILMS, WHY HALLOWEEN?

I didn’t choose Halloween. Halloween chose me.
