EVENT CANCELLED!
It is with deep regret that I must announce that the Wisconsin Underground Horror/Exploitation Film Festival 2007, scheduled for April 28th, 2007 at the Orpheum Theatre, State St. Madison, WI has been cancelled. This is due to the fact that new management at the theatre has requested us at the festival to pay a $500.00 fee to reserve the room, which we already had reserved through the previous management at no cost to us. In December, when I first contacted the Orpheum about the event, we went forward with the previous theatre manager under the agreement that in return for allowing us to use the Stage Door theatre for the day of April 28th, the theatre would get us a projector to use for screening films from DVD, a hotel room for Mr. Rebane, and just someone to be at the bar so patrons could order cocktails. In return for all of this, the theatre would keep ALL of the gate (every penny made from ticket sales, which they were to name the price) plus any money generated through liquor or food sales. We went forward on our planning on this information. I spoke with the old management at least twice a week about where our planning was, never going forward on anything unless it was cleared by them first. I was then informed last month that the manager I had been dealing with was leaving, and someone new was taking over. From my first contact with this new management, it was clear to all of us that this person did not want to do the event, was not hip on allowing us to use the theatre for the day, and was looking for us to pay for a venue that we were never asked to pay for when the event was scheduled. The old management and I did the event on a handshake deal (note to everyone—never, NEVER do anything on a handshake deal anymore, always get everything in writing, even if you “trust” the person you’re dealing with) that was more of a “you scratch my back, I scratch yours”. I have no doubts that if the old management had stayed in place, this event would be happening. After being almost completely ignored by the new management for almost a month, I then received the following e mail dated Tues, 2/13/07 This weekend I finally had a meeting with the owner of the Orpheum regarding the festival. He was very confused as to why we’d commit to the expenses of an event. We don’t have the ability to “blindly” hold events that require US to invest in them. As of 1/15/07 every booking is required to have a deposit. When people come to us with an event they are both putting down a deposit on the date and supplying EVERYTHING that they need to run the event. We happily supply staff for the door and the bar. With your proposal, you are asking that we invest close to $500 in staff, projection, and lodging as well as give up our valuable screen time with films that are already booked and under contract. This is not an agreeable expense for the Orpheum. What we need to continue with this date is to get $500 to hold the room and cover potential loss of income for the Orpheum as well as a contract for the rental. April 28th is quickly becoming a highly requested date and we have offers from several bands that are more then happy to pay the $500 deposit, ask for no expenses, and guarantee $1000 in liquor sales. If the deposit is not an option and you still need us to cover expenses then you can not hold the event at the Orpheum and will need to look for a new venue. (current managment) Directing Manager Orpheum Theatre I responded back asking if we were willing to pick up the costs of Mr. Rebane’s expenses, the projection equipment, and all of the other costs that we have already been paying for, if it would be possible to continue on the agreement we had (which was, give us the theatre, you keep all of the gate and food/liquor sales) I received this back dated 2/14/07 Cory, I wasn’t trying to tell you that the event is cancelled..just that a deposit needs to be paid to hold and confirm the date. I’m still giving you the opportunity to come down to the Orpheum and drop off a check so I’m protected for the date. The Orpheum is not in the position to promote or pay for events that previous management booked (without contract or deposit). We simply can’t afford to gamble on events. The last time Charlie Band appeared at the Orpheum attendance was so poor they had to give away tickets on the street and we didn’t book the event again. The last day of the Bill Rebane film festival there was barely anyone in attendance. If we have the same turnout for this event we stand to lose money on a Saturday night. When a projector costs $280 for the weekend from Full Compass, the cheapest room downtown is $90, and a manager/projectionist is $70 the costs start to add up. Someone also has to be responsible for Bill Rebane’s travels (hotel, maybe food?), plus pick-up and drop-off of the projector, and all of the sudden it becomes a multi-day event with expenses throughout the weekend. As the Orpheum moves on from the (previous theatre manager’s) era I’ve become committed to only making safe, sound business decisions that are no risk. I hope that you can see that through my experiences at the Orpheum I have a reason to not feel comfortable committing resources to the WI Underground Film Festival. As I stated earlier, I’m still holding the date for you and you can bring in $500 to confirm the date. From there we can discuss contract details and expenses. (current management) Directing Manager Orpheum Theatre So, no, he wasn’t telling me that the event was cancelled, he was just telling me that unless I cough up $500.00 (that I just don’t have to piss away) that he wasn’t going to hold up the previous management’s deal with me, and wasn’t going to reserve the theatre for us. This event was never a cash grab for us, this event was done out of our love for horror and exploitation, and the underground filmmakers who are keeping the true spirit alive. That’s the reason we were only asking for $5.00 per submission. This was only meant to cover our out of pocket expenses, such as the PO Box, the posters, the promotion, etc. Which, so far, we haven’t even come close to covering the PO Box, much less anything else. Myself, and the other organizers are losing a substantial amount of money on this event now that the Orpheum Theatre’s management has decided to back out of their end of the deal. The most irritating part is that the new management states “anything booked as of 1/15/07 requires a deposit”. Our event has been booked since early December, so I don’t know why our previous agreement isn’t being held up. Long story short, if you submitted a film to us, we will be returning your entry fee. We won’t be able to return the film, unless you really want/need it back. If I send back all of the films, I’m going to be holding the “Cory is homeless due to the fact he was unable to break even on the Wisconsin Underground Film Fest” fest. Give me a month, and if you haven’t received your money back from your submissions, shoot me off an e mail at LAN_EMAIL_SUBS and I’ll make sure you get it right away. Where does Wisconsin Underground go from here? We are going to keep our myspace, and our website as a forum for all of the great films and filmmakers we got to know over the course of the last few months. I will be in contact with everyone about what I can do to help them out in any way I can. I started the event at the Orpheum as a way to support the underground horror film fans, and I’m going to continue to do that in any way I can. I apologize for our vendors, to Charles Band, to Bill Rebane, but especially to the filmmakers who sent us their blood, guts, brains, and tears in the hopes that they could have their work showcased on the big screen at a horror festival. I can’t tell you how sorry I am that this event went south as fast as it did, but I just want all of you to know, the event was set up squarely, we proceeded in a manner that was sufficient for the management of the Orpheum Theatre at the time, but now we have been backed into a corner that we cannot gt out of. I mean, we’d have to get 100 entries just to pay for the theatre, not to mention our other costs (Rebane’s hotel, projection equipment, posters, etc). I will be contacting everyone I was dealing with individually in the next week or so, but if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to e mail me, or you can log on to www.orpheumtheatre.net and speak to them if you wish. I can’t thank all of you enough, and I can’t apologize enough. All the best, and continued success to all of you, Cory-Wisconsin Underground Visit us online at www.geocities.com/wisconsinunderground.
Kane Hodder does an excellent job for his first starring role without a mask. He is sufficiently creepy as a demented killer. I just wish he had been playing Ed Gein in this boring piece of poop. For whatever reason, Gein is played as a serious, steel-eyed killer who offs anyone who gets in his way. The real Ed was supposedly a likable, soft spoken man who kept to himself and had a few mental problems. The Gein in this movie may have just as well been Leatherface. The gore was straight out of a modern day torture flick. The pacing of the movie kept me glued to the inside of my eyelids.
If you are a Kane Hodder fan, I’d say rent it because he does do a good job despite the rest of the movie. Ed Gein aficionados should stick with the Steve Railsback version or Bob “Porky’s” Clark’s Demented.

Gross Movie Reviews #83
By Tim Gross
Sorry, it has been a little while since the last batch of reviews. I have my reasons though for not writing some recently. A) I have been getting my book together, ordering it, promoting it (see myspace page). B) Been getting ready for Cinema Wasteland. C) Watching a lot of crap lately! So hopefully you will enjoy this latest batch of reviews and look forward to seeing more reviews on a regular basis.
Saw 3 (DVD) – The second sequel in the series with another sequel coming… But anyhow apparently Tobin Bell’s cancer can’t even kill him at this point. Personally I think this has to be the longest six months in movie history as in the first movie Jigsaw was given six months, maybe twelve to live? But I can get past that. So this time around it is very apparent it is Shawnee Smith doing the traps and so on. The film has a good amount of blood and gore but what was surprising was in the third movie the filmmakers decided they were going to explain everything from the other two movies. Was this a good thing or a bad thing? I don’t know as I do not like the series that much but it actually caught me off guard. But this is clear if and when there is “Saw 4†and Tobin Bell is back, I never want to hear from any dumbass out there about Jason, Freddy, Michael, Leprechaun ever again, because they ended it. So I’m very curious of “Saw 4â€. But the DVD is packed with lots of extras and is worth picking up if you are a serious ‘Saw’ fan. But I give it 2 ½ stars.
Escape From Sobibor (DVD) – A film starring the man, the myth, the legend: Rutger Hauer as a Russian solider in a prison Nazi camp with some of his comrades along with over 600 Jews. The movie is base on a true story about the biggest escape attempted from a Nazi prison camp during WWII. If you are a big Rutger Hauer as me this DVD is worth searching for, but be warn as it can take some time to find? I give it 3 stars.
Cold Blood (DVD) – Another hard to find film starring Rutger Hauer from his younger days in the mid-70s made in Germany and dubbed in English. Rutger Hauer is on the run from the mob because he was flying drugs and back and forth for them and decides he wants out. He gets together with an innocent woman who has nothing to do with him or the mob but begins to fall in love with Rutger’s character and help him get away from the mob. Another movie to look for if you are a hard core Rutger Hauer film fan and I give it 2 ½ stars.
Death Wish (DVD) – The film that made Charles Bronson super famous for playing a man who had enough after his wife and daughter are attacked and raped by three criminals that including Jeff Goldblum in his first role I believe. But Chuck begins to hit the streets of New York and look for criminal activity and kill the criminals! For a movie made in the early 70s still holds up somewhat and is worthy seeing if you have never seen it. The film also spawned several sequels all starring Charles Bronson. I give it 4 stars.
Cyborg (DVD) – Possibly Jean-Claude Van Damme’s best film ever is about years into the future after war has ravaged the earth a plague has hit what is left of the US and there is no cure. Well a cyborg and her companion are on the run from New York back to Atlanta with a possible cure in her head. They are being chased by pirates and need help as Jean-Claude is their only hope of getting back to Atlanta safely! It is an awesome “The Road Warrior†type of film still well worth watching. Also a strange fact is when the VHS tape was released in 1989 there was a promo comic book of the film sent with each copy. These comics are hard to find and do not have a price that I know of but of course I own one! But I give the film 3 ½ stars.
Saturday the 14th (DVD) – Of course a comedy spoof of the Friday the 13th series name that was released in 1981. The film is the funniest or the greatest but is well worth watch just to take you back to see what Hollywood thought was funny as a family moves into a cursed house with a cursed book that lets out monsters that can take over the world. Look for Jeffery Tambor as a vampire in the film who is trying to get the cursed book. I give it 2 ½ stars as it looses steam halfway through.
Final Destination 3 (DVD) – This time around it deals with kids who jump off of a roller coaster before it rolls off the tracks and crashes which would of killed all of them. It pretty much goes like the first two movies exception you do not see Tony Todd this time you only hear his voice and everyone dies. But the big thing with the DVD compared to the other two films is that you get to choose the fate of the characters in the film. You choose whether they live or die! So of course I tried this but for some reason it wasn’t working on my DVD player when I pressed the buttons. But I wanted to see what the end of the movie would be if all the characters lived? I wondered if they put in a different ending that would kill everyone in one swoop. I know I’m sick that way but someone has to do it… I give the film 2 ½ stars.
Spider Baby (DVD) – A cult film made in the early 60s starring Lon Chaney and Sid (Galaxy of Terror) Haig. The film is about Lon taking care of his brother’s three kids who have a warp sense of what is wrong and what is right mainly because whoever from the outside world approaches the house ends up eventually dead! It drags a little in the middle but well worth digging up if you are any kind of Sid Haig fan or just a film buff as the film is a bit disturbing for the time it was made. I give the film 3 stars.
Alien Invasion Arizona (DVD) – Guys in rubber alien suits crash land in a small town in Arizona and the army comes to exterminate them and fail. It becomes up to some ex-convicts and a county sheriff to save the day. It is a very shitty poor attempt at a rip-off of “Aliens, Mind Ripper, and Xtro 2†all combine. The sad part is I think it rips off whole scenes or at least tries to from “Xtro 2â€! The film ends just becoming one big blood-drenched shitfest that knocks off “Xtro 3†as being the worst sci-fi/horror film ever made! I actually felt like I lost brain cells watching this? I give it 0 stars.
Masters of Horror: Pelts (DVD) – Take this as a sign, Dario Argento is back and in big and bloody way! For the second straight year Dario has directed a really cool episode of “MOHâ€. The episode is about John Saxon and his son traps some raccoons on somebody else’s land. Well not long after they do and begin to use them as pelts the son kills John Saxon and himself. Whoever comes in contact with these raccoon skins they die in a very bloody, gory, and very cool and sick way! The episode also stars Meat Loaf where he skins his upper half of his body that for the first time in years on got a tingly feeling inside just watching. The scene would make most people just cringe when watching it! I give this episode of “MOH†4 stars.
Terror in the Aisles (VHS) – A very cool film or I should say a documentary that is narrated by horror film legend Donald Pleasance and “Robocop and Carrie’s†Nancy Allen. They take you on a journey through tons of horror films new and old up until 1984 when this was made and talks about what scares people and why! They also touch onto mob films and action films. This documentary is a must see for a horror film or just a regular film buff… I give it 4 stars.
Crank (DVD) – The guy that starred as the ‘transporter’ in the “Transporter†films is a hired hitman who is poisoned because he decides he wants out of the killing business to be with his hot as hell girlfriend (Amy Smart). This isn’t just any poison, there is no cure but if he can keep up his adrenaline he will live a longer, enough time for him to kill the person who poisoned him. The film is a non-stop action film; literally if you blink you miss something! It might not be as good as the “Transporter†films but well worth watching! If that isn’t a good enough reason then this should be as you get to see Amy Smart topless. NICE! But I give the movie 3 stars.

Well Buffy fans, if you haven’t had much to cheer about since they have taken the popular show off the air a couple years ago, I have good news for you if you haven’t heard yet? The new “Buffy” comic book is out and picks up where the 8th season would have begun and has Joss Whedon writing the script! The first issue has been out for only a week but I have already seen it in places that do not usually carry too many comic books. Which could mean they are expecting a big demand on this series. Being a Buffy fan myself I gotta say it takes a little bit to get use to but it is worth the $2.99 a month. I give the comic book 3 stars out of 4 as it picks up with all 1800 slayers now invovled and there is already a new dark force luming in the background! Check it out!
