Gross Movie Reviews #81

Gross Movie Reviews #81
By Tim Gross

The Outing (VHS) – A classic horror film from 1986 that has some teenagers who sneak into a museum after hours and are trapped by an ancient genie. You have your blood, not a whole lot in breasts, but one huge ass monster that seems to only move on wheels. The film is very corny and low budget for the 80s usual slasher fare but well worth seeking out at the old video store if you are any kind of 80s horror fan? Not as good as “Sorority Babes Slime Bowl-O-Rama” but still worth the 2 ½ stars I give the film and be warned it starts slow.

Le6ion of the Dead (DVD) – Another horror film from the German filmmaker Olaf Ittenbach that is made in the same vein as Peter Jackson’s “Dead Alive aka Braindead”. For one reason or another, demons, zombies, and serial killers are being drawn to a small town for a show down of sorts. Meanwhile two undead men are going door to door looking for recruits for the war and having a hard time finding them as something bad always happens to the one. And during this all happening somehow a demon girl/waitress falls in love with a man who himself and his friend just happen to walk into this demon war! Lots of blood and gore, lots of humor, lots of action, and a love story make this one hell of a horror film! Before you watch make sure you have beer but also the unrated version as the cut American version barely makes sense and cuts out a good amount of the cool gore scenes. I give the DVD 3 ½ stars.

Slap Shot (DVD) – The hockey film from the mid-70s that gave us the phrase “Old-time hockey…yeah!” Seen all the sports films? You haven’t seen them all if you haven’t seen this film that stars Paul Newman as a hockey player/coach playing for one of the worst teams in the Federation League. Filmed mostly in Johnstown, Pa. A classic sports film for all film fans as I give the movie 4 stars.

Summer Camp Nightmare (VHS) – Chuck Conners stars as a new camp counselor who wants to change a few things at a popular summer camp. When some unruly teenagers object to the changes the teenagers lock up all the adults and take over the camp to change things to the way they want. Think of a summer camp with no rules, no adults, and you have your “Summer Camp Nightmare”. It isn’t exactly a horror film maybe more of an unrated after-school special but a fun film that many horror fans consider close enough to a horror film to be one of many fan favorites from the 80s. This film is well worth the find, I give it 3 ½ stars.

American Gothic (DVD) – Yvonne DeCarlo is a twenty something woman trying to get over the death of her baby by taking a trip with some friends. The small plane they are flying runs into problems and they are forced to land on a small island that happens to have Rod Steiger and his unconventional family living there. They usually kill the visitors until the tables are turned once DeCarlo’s character has a total breakdown and snaps. This downer type of horror film is bleak and has its share of gore that any type of 80s horror fan will want to watch at least once. I give the DVD 3 stars. Also look at the first person get killed as he starred in the “Swamp Thing” TV series as ‘Dr. Arcane’.

Feeders (DVD) – Another horror film from Jon (Woodchipper Massacre) McBride made for most likely under a thousand dollars that has aliens searching earth for food and to takeover the world. The aliens look like they were made from cardboard and are about as flimsy as a sheet of paper. Bad acting, and some bad edits highlight the film but that doesn’t stop Jon from pushing through in making what is laughable at times alien attacking earth film on no money! ‘Feeders’ is another film that Jon has made that is so horrible that you begin to enjoy it. Thank you Jon for giving us bad film fans another bad film to love. I give it 3 stars.

Feeders 2: Slay Bells (DVD) – You can find both films on the same DVD or separate, but this time around Jon McBride hands over the reins of filmmaking to the Polonia brothers but does make a special appearance as a survivor trying to warn everyone. As you can guess this time to aliens are back during Christmas time to feed. The sad part is the film looks to be even on a lower budget if possible and the aliens look even worse as they now look like large green light bulbs! Not as fun as the first film but if you tortured yourself the first time your ass just as well watch the sequel. Honestly, what can it do except kill a few brain cells. Just like the first film lots extras to check out and have fun with. I give it 1 ½ stars.

Among Us (DVD) – A film from the Polonia brothers and Jon (Woodchipper Massacre) McBride who decided to make a micro budgeted film about a filmmaker who has made horror/slasher films about Bigfoot all his career until he has a brush with the real Bigfoot and wants to make a film “Blair Witch style” about Bigfoot. The first half of the film is more of a documentary as the filmmaker is looking for experts of sorts to help him on his search. The second half is the search for Bigfoot. But the film is average at best but entertaining and the film is stolen away by Jon McBride playing a professor who thinks there are Bigfoot monsters everywhere? Funny at times and proves once again the “Blair Witch Project” was fluke and that Jon McBride still knows how to make an entertaining bad film for no money! I give the DVD 3 stars.

Fire Serpent (DVD/Sci-fi Channel) – William Shanter produces a film that stars Nicholas (Xander from ‘Buffy’ TV series) Brandon as a fire fighter who is fighting a fire demon from the sun. Don’t make repeat that… I’m serious, also stars “Night of the Comet’s” Robert Beltran! The movie is horrible and barely watchable but what are you expecting from Shanter? I give it ½ a star.

Any comments or questions please send to: LAN_EMAIL_SUBS or www.myspace.com/slasherfilmfan and you can also find a book I wrote called, “Gross Movie Reviews Volume One” that is available at: www.lulu.com and www.amazon.com . Also you can find me at www.bastardsofhorror.com , www.bloodtypeonline.com , and in the movie review section of Ultra Violent magazine. Remember folks if you are renting from Blockbuster you are not renting from the best! Support your local independent video store! It will keep horror alive………

Why horror movie fans should be disappointed in Sam Raimi’s ‘Ghost House Pictures’?

Why horror movie fans should be disappointed in Sam Raimi’s ‘Ghost House Pictures’?

Article by Tim Gross

Some horror fans that are reading this are wondering why I would throw out such a statement about Mr. Raimi’s production company. Other horror fans reading this will totally understand where I am coming from. To me it is simple… The films that have been released in the past two years from Sam Raimi’s ‘Ghost House Pictures’: Boogeyman, The Grudge 1 & 2, The Messengers, The Return, and I’m sure I am forgetting another one or two other films that have been anything except groundbreaking horror! They have been: a remake, piles of shit, boring, very predictable, a waste of time, an insult to a horror movie fan’s intelligence, and I could go on and on and that is just the nice things. Outside of The Grudge remake, none of these have been considered successes and have been considered down right horrible! And what is with not pushing for an ‘R’ rating? Why PG-13 Mr. Raimi? It has been proven over the past three years or so that the ‘R’ rated horror film is back and making loads of cash. So why make horror films for dummies or horror movies that most of your audience already seen a whole six months ago?

The list of questions could go on and on about Mr. Raimi’s company ‘Ghost House Pictures’. I was one of the first horror fans out of the gate when hearing this company being formed that it would be a godsend for horror fans! I screamed from the rooftops to people and horror fans alike that this could be the greatest thing for horror movies! I even wrote a fucking article about it! But in the past two years or so I have been proven wrong time and time again by Mr. Raimi putting his name on these so-called “horror films”. You would think with Mr. Raimi giving us the Evil Dead films, Darkman, and the Spider-man films he would take some pride in giving us at least somewhat cool horror films? Instead, we get pure fucking cow shit for 90 minutes or so, let me jump for fucking joy! You would think with Mr. Raimi earlier in his career having the trouble he did trying to get Evil Dead and Army of Darkness films released he would have learned from that experience and put that into his thinking when he is a producer for these films? But I guess not. It is becoming apparent anymore these days his company is hurting the genre more than helping it like I first thought. When you read statements in Fangoria about the film ‘The Messengers’, “We wanted to make a horror film that scares 15 year old girls”, you loose faith. Sam Raimi is still one my favorite filmmakers of all time for giving us all he has the past 20 or so years, but these days I can’t forgive him for becoming the new Wes Craven of just throwing your name on any old horror movie in hopes of building the resume as a horror great and taking money from anyone and everyone for pure shit. Mr. Raimi you could learn a thing or two from John Carpenter and George Romero, but that is for another article. These reasons and many more as ‘Ghost House Pictures’ produces more crap or so-called horror films is why horror movie fans should be disappointed in who once was a great mind in the horror genre.

Christopher P. Garetano’s HORROR BUSINESS DVD RELEASE - March 13th, 2007

Horror Business is an outrageously entertaining documentary about guerrilla horror filmmakers and the bizarre culture that drives them to pursue their dreams. In 2003, filmmaker Christopher P. Garetano began what would become a two year journey to discover what possesses people to become horror filmmakers… Armed with nothing but a camera and a microphone, Chris traveled all over the United States to visit independent filmmakers on and off their sets. In Horror Business you will witness that two year journey unfold and meet some truly independent filmmakers including Mark Borchardt (American Movie) and Dave Gebroe (Zombie Honeymoon) along with monster movie personalities like Herschell Gordon Lewis (Blood Feast), Joe Bob Briggs (cult film critic & author), and Sid Haig (Spider Baby, The Devils Rejects). Horror Business is a timeless essay of popcorn generation nostalgia and behind-the-scenes moments that just may prove ..movie making really is no way to spend a life..
