Gross Movie Reviews #74
By Tim Gross

Haunted Highway (DVD) – Another lame attempt at a ghost story shot DV that sounded good on paper but fell apart the first second the camera started rolling! The title pretty much speaks for itself with a cover that pretty much copies the ‘Emily Rose’ image from that other stupid movie. I give it a ½ star.

BTK Killer (DVD) – First when filmmakers are going to undertake something like this I feel you better have some kind of budget or a very talented cast? This movie had neither as the filmmakers try to capture what the “BTK killer (bind/torture/kill)” was like during his 30 years of terror. The biggest problem when trying to do a film about any serial killer is you must have a very talented actor who makes you think he is that character, make you totally believe in his acting. Second biggest problem, when shooting on DV that is usually the sign of lack of budget, so you better know how to hide your low budget? Third, the film barely runs over 80 minutes but feels the film ran 3 hours long making you exhausted once the movie is over! At all costs stay away from this tempting pile dog poo as I give this movie 0 stars!

Night of the Hell Hamsters (DVD-R) – All the way from New Zealand comes this short film about college kids and possessed hamsters! The budget is small and the filmmakers don’t hide it, but that does not take away from the film as it is made in the same vein as maybe a “Bad Taste” or “Cemetery Man” where as you watch, the budget means nothing to you in this wonderful horror/comedy! A couple college age kids get together to have sex of course but play on a makeshift ‘OUIJA’ board and something bad happens! A pet hamster becomes possessed and chaos begins in a bloody fun filled 15 minutes of film! The film is over the top and well worth checking out and you can find it at www.nightofthehellhamsters.com or www.myspace.com/hellhamsters . I give this great short film about killer hamsters 4 stars!

Nice Guy Blues (Internet) – Hopefully soon to be on available on DVD is this Michael McCallum film that not only did he produced but starred in also. The film is 12 minute short film that is about two men trying to collect money that is past due from a man on bets he made! Along the way there is talk about car speakers, drugs, etc. A pretty cool short film that you wish might had a little more background but just glad to another film with Michael McCallum involved in! I give it 3 stars and you can find it at www.unsafefilmoffice.com !

Skeleton Man (DVD) – Apparently like Lance Henriksen, Michael Rooker is willing to do almost any kind of film? This time around a bad horror film about Michael Rooker and a bunch of commandos being haunted by an ancient curse! Nothing great but if you are a die hard Rooker fan then find it if you can? I give this movie 1 ½ stars.

Batman (DVD) – In 1989, people could not believe how cool this movie was? It was the ultimate superhero movie at the time, nothing came close. It was the first time Hollywood got the superhero film right! Watching this now compared to “Spider-man, X-men, or even the Batman Begins”, the movie has seem to lost its luster but it is still an entertaining film to watch because if there was anybody that was perfectly casted for any film it was Jack Nicholson as the “Joker”! He played the character perfectly; he was what you wanted to see in a villain in a superhero film. And now looking back at the movie more now than ever it looks like he carried it with his portray of the ‘Joker’ character! I give this film 3 stars.

Voodoo Moon (DVD) – This film has everything: Eric Mabius, Dee Wallace, Jeffery Combs, Charisma Carpenter, a good vs. evil storyline along the lines of the Prophecy films, and lots of blood. Sounds great, right? Again it might sound good on paper doesn’t always mean it will be a good horror film. The story moves at a snail’s pace and some of the over acting by the actors and actresses especially Eric Mabius takes away from this film from better than average. I give the film 2 stars.

Night Feeders (DVD) – Rednecks face off against CGI-aliens from a meteor in this bloodfest of a film that for the most part takes place in two places, a house and the woods! Not a great movie, not a bad movie, but maybe worth the rental fee on a rainy day if nothing much is there at the video store? I give the movie 2 stars.

Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (DVD) – “The horror hostess with the mostess”, Elvira stars in her own movie in 1988. Did not do well at the box office at the time but keep in mind the company that own the rights “New World Pictures” was about to go under and had their own problems to worry about! But over the years in some fans eyes this film is considered somewhat of a cult film that has Elvira playing herself in the film and goes to a town to inherit her aunt’s house and cooking recipes! In the process she finds out she comes from a long line of witches, which at the same time the town frowns upon her arrival in their small quiet town. Lots of bad boob and sex jokes highlight this fun film! Elvira, the first horror hostess of horror also made a sequel to this film and is still active in the horror genre as she was recently interviewed in an issue of “Rue Morgue”! This movie pretty much sums what Elvira is all about as I give this film 3 stars.
