The Grudge 2 grabs Number One spot in Box Office & let’s talk remakes a little…
By Tim Gross
Well, I had just written this article once already but then the computer or should I say the website suffered an “ERRORâ€! Ugh! So I’m rewriting this again so I can post it for Monday for all the horror fans. Between people trying to stick my computer with unwanted spyware this past weekend and me not able to make the Friday the 13th concert this weekend, the weekend didn’t go as well as planned until I seen the box office totals?
“The Grudge 2†this past weekend grabbed the number one spot at the box office with $22 million! A lot, right? Well, the original American remake made $30 million its opening weekend! Is this the sign I have been looking for? To all fairness the movie was made on a $20 million budget so the studios should be happy, right? In my opinion, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear Hollywood or “Ghost House Pictures†in this case start bitching they should have made more! But down $8 million from the original remake could be a sign to me… But moving on to “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning†fell from the number two spot last weekend to the number five spot this weekend. “TCM: prequel†brought in $7.8 million this past weekend which is a huge drop compared to bringing in something $20 million last weekend for a total of $30.5 million. Another sign? Now, I’m waiting to hear what ‘New Line’ has to say to this? Did all those great reviews we the horror fans kept hearing about lie to us or has the average horror fan made their stand this past couple weeks against PG-13 and remakes/prequels? Now, don’t get me wrong these movies brought a shitload of cash but it seems like my wishful thinking might be paying off. Why? With the “TCM: remake†it made over $80 million so I was expecting the prequel to do over $100 million which now looks like it might be happy to get $40 million when all said and done with! Again I got to ask if this was such a great 4 star horror movie why aren’t more people going to see it? And “The Grudge 2†this should have been huge?
Maybe it is wishful thinking by me, maybe it is karma, or maybe it is the sign I’ve been waiting for? The sign that the average horror fan is looking for something more than a prequel or a sequel to a remake or PG-13 horror, time will tell. But in my opinion, I think this is the sign of the beginning of the end… Horror fans want something else, they will support their films but they want something different like The Descent, Feast, and Hard Candy which were great films in their own right this past year! This is the sign I’ve been looking for, this the beginning for what’s going to go down in 2007. Which of course sets up what exactly is going to happen with films such as Saw 3 and the Black Christmas remake? If “TCM prequel†was still strong and “The Grudge 2†did even better I would say horror fan’s taste hasn’t changed but there is something in the air and I’m here to tell you first this is the beginning of that change! And the next few weeks should be very interesting?
Remakes, I know I don’t like talking about this subject but this was something I tripped over while doing some research for the “Bastards of Horror†website. Did you know, “It’s Alive, Terror Train, and Scanners†are all in some form of pre-production right now to be remade! Has Hollywood gotten so desperate that now they are going to remake the cheesy horror films now? Anymore I guess it shouldn’t surprise me but these were films that were maybe cult to maybe some noticeable status somewhere for horror fans but every horror fan can name ten better films. I understand TCM, Hills, The Omen, were remade but I have come to terms with that but these three, I laugh because this is only further support of what I feel is the beginning of changes in 2007 for horror fans?! Good or bad I feel things are about to change. Remember you heard it here first from Gross, Tim (I watch crap) Gross!
