Gross Movie Reviews #70
By Tim Gross
Well horror fans you get a special treat this time around as this has a few new releases and a bunch of short and feature-length films I watched for the organizers of the “Thriller! Chiller!†film festival in Michigan! Some were good, some were pure crap, but it was all fun… Don’t forget to check out www.thrillerchiller.com to see the results!
Darkness: The Vampire Version (DVD) – Finally the 2-disc special edition of the underground classic, “Leif Jonker’s Darknessâ€! I remember watching this for the first time back in 1996 I think it was when I had the flu and thought this was the next “The Dead Next Doorâ€? Well, after years of different cuts, shitty VHS copies, and a darkly lite film, many horror film fans, including myself feel that it was “The Dead Next Door†for the 90s. The gory vampire film made for no money was beautiful in the fact that it took a story about a vampire which would invade a town and turn people into vampires or kill them until the whole town was destroyed! He would move on from one town to the next, the vampire problem spreaded like a plague through small towns. The movie was shot on film and looked grainy on VHS and some of the scenes that were beautiful were dark on VHS. But with the new remastered print for DVD, the blood, the gore, are better than ever to see! This vampire film inspired quite a few filmmakers out there that a great vampire movie can be shot for no money if you have the talent, the passion, and skill for great make-up effects? I give the movie 4 stars.
Masters of Horror: Imprint (DVD) – Clearly the best episode of the series for good reason: It was banned from cable fucking TV! Explain that one to me? Ok you can do whatever you want for an episode as long as it is an hour long! Director Takashi Miike brings them a film about an American journalist looking for his lost love, who he promised to take to America. He travels to an island of whores where he thinks he might have found her but finds something he could never, ever even dreamt about? If anything about this episode apparently there was one too many conservatives previewing this episode for “Showtime†because what were they expecting was fucking “Sleeping Beautyâ€? You ask Takashi Miike to make an episode of horror with knowing he goes past that edge most don’t dare even coming close to in filmmaking and you get a film that is banned for cable because it is too graphic! Turn on the fucking local news dumb asses? I have seen worst images! “Showtime†dares to have another season, go fuck yourself “Showtimeâ€! I give this episode 4 stars and a big FUCK YOU for “Showtimeâ€!
The Woods (DVD) – Witches from long ago run a very upstanding and small school that looks for troubled and very smart young ladies to attend. They are picky about who attends their school but for good reason as they are trying to find the young lady that is an actual witch but doesn’t know it to take their place. Bruce Campbell plays a dad in a supporting actor role in this movie that is more about scares than blood and guts and pulls it off well! This film is a must see for the gorehounds and the mainstream film fans, I give it 3 ½ stars!
The Institution (DVD) – A short film about college kids that make their way across a lake to an abandon asylum to only find monster of some kind is trying to kill them now that they are trapped in the asylum! I give it 2 ½ stars.
The Listening Dead (DVD) – A short film shot in black and white about a ghost who enjoys a man’s piano playing and gets revenge on the wife of the piano player after the wife erases his face and hands since he didn’t pay enough attention to her! It is a pretty good put together silent ghost film. I give the film 3 stars.
Alone (DVD) – A short film about a college girl that can’t sleep and is alone at a sorority house and finds out there is a murderer running loose. She keeps hearing noises and lets in a boy she knows into the house not knowing if he is the killer or not? A fun film for its 20 minutes, I give it 3 stars.
Beyond Midnight (DVD) – A short film about a woman who goes insane after her boyfriend dies. The girl is hot but the movie is not, I give it 2 stars.
Broken (DVD) – A short film about a woman who is insane and dreams she is being held captive by thugs and rescued by a wannabe ninja! Yeah, I know… I give it 2 stars.
Oculus (DVD) – A short film about a man who believes this mirror he has just purchased is cursed and has the power to kill people as he tries to prove it with cameras, phones, etc. It’s not bad for 30 minutes but if it went any longer I would have found very “Blair Witch-like†annoying. I give the film 1 ½ stars.
The Chipping (DVD) – A short film made with no money but lots of imagination about a vampire and a werewolf living in an apartment building trying to adjust to humans. I give it 3 ½ stars.
Domicide (DVD) – A short film about teenagers breaking into an older person’s home and partying until they are being killed a masked intruder! I give it 2 stars.
Rhapsody in Red (DVD) – A short film about an ugly girl who has always picked the wrong guy and starts a relationship with a convict and feels she has finally found the right guy! I give it 1 star.
The Lost (DVD) – The first of many books of Jack Ketchum’s which are going to be brought to the big screen. A very slow going film about three friends who kill two girls in the woods and get away with it until a cop begins snooping around four years later convinced it was done by the local bad boy! The movie runs very slow for the first 100 minutes but ends with one hell of a bang up ending. I give it 2 1 /2 stars.
The 8th Plague (DVD) – A film that has actress Syn Devil in a supporting role about mid-twenty somethings looking for a girl who possibly went to a abandoned jail that was closed because of a riot started by possessed prisoners. No where as good as ‘Zombie Deathhouse’ and not as fun as ‘Dead Men Walking’ but the cool gore effects make up for a lackluster film. I give the film 2 ½ stars.
The Final Curtain (DVD) – College kids in a ‘drama troop’ party hard until they kill a girl with giving her the date-rape drug! Soon naked women and the rest of the club begin to get killed off! It has its moments for a modern day slasher flick, but bad acting and bad editing hurt the film! But it doesn’t hurt that Reggie Bannister plays a drunken campus security guy. I give the movie 2 stars.
Zombie Honeymoon (DVD) – A movie made for “Showtime†about a young couple who get married and go to the beach only to be attacked by some sick looking man who comes from the sea. Soon the husband after dying and coming back to life soon discovers he has a taste for flesh and his wife finds out how much is she willing to take “till death do us part†to the fullest! Awesome downbeat movies with some cool zombie make-up and gore, I give the film 3 ½ stars.
The Quick & The Undead (DVD) – A film that seems to pay homage to Clint Eastwood westerns somewhat with zombies! Its 75 years after the zombie virus has spread across the globe and it is up to bounty hunters to kill the zombies. The movie starts off strong but has a really lousy ending! I give it 2 ½ stars.
They Must Eat (DVD) – A strange man is left a house with a secret in the basement? He must take care of the Ghouls that live in the basement after his uncle dies and live his own life. He tries to balance a relationship with a girl at work while picking up homeless people, pizza drivers, and etc. to feed the Ghouls in the basement! The movie isn’t the greatest but with the hot chic and the cool monster make-up on the Ghouls it is worth checking out some time! I give the film 3 stars.
The Slaughter (DVD) – Naked witches sacrifice themselves to Satan and now haunt a house that is being cleaned up by some college kids. It has the naked witches of course but it is no where near as good as Witchhouse or its sequel part 3 starring Debbie Rochon! I give it 2 stars.
Horrors of War (DVD) – WWII troops are being attacked by a zombie, a werewolf, a slue of other experiments during the war with a man telling the story to his superior officer the “horrors of war†he has seen. The movie runs slow and lack of budget hurts this movie in the long run. This movie is one of those; sounds good on paper but doesn’t translate on the big screen. I give it 1 ½ stars.
