Bastards of Horror visits “Out of the Ordinaryâ€
By Tim Gross
Well, I took a drive to Glassport, Pa., to check out a store that was described, “To possibly be my thingâ€. The place happens to be about 13 miles from my house, which wasn’t too bad for something I wasn’t expecting too much. I drive up to it and it looks like a normal everyday CD shop from the outside, but once inside it becomes what most horror fans have been looking for in a store. Heather, who runs the store with her husband was very nice to show me around and explain to me several times that this store is aimed at the horror fan, because of her and her husband being big horror movie fans! Whether its horror soundtracks, horror music, horror T-shirts, or just horror movies they have a huge selection of stuff for your obsessive horror fan like me! But that is not all they have, they have your usual movie and CD fare for the mainstream crowd also because for every horror male fan there is that girlfriend who hasn’t even seen Saw 2 yet? Or that Goth girl whose boyfriend that hasn’t ever heard of “The Lost Boysâ€! They have kid’s movies, comedies, etc. for others but their main thing is horror movies as their used DVD and VHS section is beautiful and very reasonably priced! Plus they have reasonably priced new DVD’s, horror CD’s, etc… Heather explained to me they have been in business about two years and learning from their mistakes but having lots of fun running such a cool store such as theirs, so check out the pictures and check out the place or give them a call:

Gross Movie Reviews #69
By Tim Gross
Yes, my favorite number and because of that, this batch of horror movie reviews is an extra special, extra large, extra El Grande edition for all the people whose favorite number like me is 69! So let’s begin, shall we…
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (DVD) – The 1991 sequel to the 1984 hit that is in my opinion one of three movies to use CGI in a good way! Arnold is back again and this time he isn’t there to kill Sarah Conner… He is there to help her! Because the machines in the future have noticed their first attempt to kill her was a failure but not to fear this time they sent a meaner, stronger, and more unrelenting killing machine than Arnold?! Robert Patrick who plays the T-1000 character brilliantly! But what made this sequel better than the original: the effects are bigger and better, the action is bigger and better, and the movie is possibly one the best Sci-Fi/Action movies made in the 20th century! The special edition DVD is the way to go as you haven’t seen the movie until you see the deleted scenes restored into the film like they were in the special edition laserdisc and VHS copies. Over 13 minutes more! I give this movie 4 stars!
Leeches! (DVD) – The title says it all and I came to the conclusion that the filmmaker is a gay man or a woman who really likes their men characters. As half of the film seem to be long wide shots of men’s ‘packages’ and ‘torso areas’ and the girls were not that nice looking for a “mutant insect gone wild movie There is usually one hot woman in these films, this was the exception! I give it 2 stars.
The Ryli Morgan Collection (DVD) – What can be said about this hot, spicy, little actress with next door girl charm that hasn’t already been said? Well, I don’t know, but I can say this Mark Baranowski brings you four of Ryli’s best films in a DVD package that is just too hot to watch! Mark gives you “Despairâ€, “Ryli Morgan: Auditionâ€, “Runaway Terrorâ€, and “Expendableâ€, four of Ryli’s best, and if the second film doesn’t get you excited, man or woman, you have to be fucking dead! These two make the perfect couple. Mark with his great behind the camera work, and Ryli with her appeal that just leaps off the screen the first second she hits the screen! You would be a fool not to buy this collection, I give it 4 stars! You can purchase it at www.rylimorgan.com .
Disturbance (DVD) – You ever hear, “Movie box covers are deceiving?†Well, this film proves that theory… It looks like it should be a really cool Sci-Fi/Action thriller and turns out to be a dud! I had more fun yanking my nose hair out than watching this; I give the movie 0 stars!
Blood Surf (DVD) – Surfers, a filmmaker, and their agent go to a small island far from America to film a surfing documentary. Problem, giant bloodthirsty crocodile is after them! I give the movie 3 stars.
Feast (theater) – Right behind “The Descent†I would have to say “Feast†is the next best horror film in 2006! For about 3 million dollar budget for the Project Greenlight film it gives us: blood, gore, cool monsters, and characters that are not your cookie cut outs from the WB or MTV and it all takes place in a bar! It is like a crazy mix of Dead Alive, Evil Dead, and for some reason reminds me a little of the bar scene in “Near Dark! But anyhow I give this film 4 stars!
Kracken: Tentacles of the Deep (Sci-fi Channel/DVD) – One of the O’Connell brothers hooks up with the hottest actress in syndicated television (Victoria “Cleopatra 2525 and Mutant X†Pratt) to go find a giant squid that protects an ancient and valuable orb that has a history of bad things come to the ones who possess it! I give the movie 2 ½ stars.
The Dead Beat Volume 1 (VHS) – This rare find was found rotting away on eBay by a friend. This was somebody’s different attempt at a horror magazine but on video. Was produced in 1989 and has behind the scenes of films like Nightmare on Elm St. 4 & 5, Friday the 13th Part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan, Phantasm 2, and KNB FX! Some pretty cool shit including interviews with Reggie Bannister and Angus Scrimm! This is an ultimate find for a true horror fan. I give the one hour tape 4 stars.
Dark Wind Woods (DVD) – A 26 minute film about woods haunted by ghosts and shot in black and white, silent film style. A pretty relaxing and cool film that is just made for the intention of advertising this “Dark Wind Woods†as a Halloween Haunted Attraction that opens every year around the end of September and is near Dayton, Ohio. The filmmaker is Kip Poe Speicher who also made the horror art film “Dreadfulâ€! I give it 3 stars and you can find more info about the attraction at www.darkwindwoods.com .
The Second Death (DVD) – A short 15 minute film about people who are trapped in a farmhouse with hungry zombies waiting outside. Yes, it is very Romero influenced but runs quick, as the action, gore, and chaos fill the 15 minutes. It’s a short film that is just a lot fun to watch. I give it 3 stars. Check it out or buy it at www.seconddeath.com .
The Forever Dead (DVD) – A prequel/remake/sequel to ‘The Second Death’, the filmmaker goes Sam Raimi/Evil Dead 2 on us and makes a feature-length zombie film with the same characters from ‘The Second Death’ and gives us more character background, a lot more gore, and hope there is still cool feature-length low budget zombie films being made! I give it 3 ½ stars and you can find it and buy it at www.theforeverdead.com .
Remover (DVD) – Bob Heckman and Robert Harrison are at it again at Ramsteer Films as they release their newest but oldest short film feature. What? The film was made about four or five years ago and the ‘Bobs’ went back and put some finishing touches on their first film which has never been released! This isn’t their usual horror/comedy fare; it is a straight forward classic Sci-Fi Thriller! A mob hitman called, “a remover†has a close brush with death and decides it might be time to get out of the “remover†business and visits and volunteers for his brother’s experimental time machine! The ending is original and makes you want to watch the film over again. The film runs about 30 minutes and has all the usual Ramsteer Film extras. I give the movie 3 ½ stars and you can check it out or buy it at www.ramsteerfilms.com .
Legends (DVD) – A sad attempt at a serious and very low budgeted short film about brothers who believe the world’s fate is in their hands as they fight to death believing in two different things. It comes off as people who have played way too much Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering way too much! I give it 1 star for just having the balls to attempt in making something like this! Check it out and buy it at www.darkmullet.com .
Wolfster (Part 1): The Curse of the Emo-Vamp (DVD) – From the same filmmaker, who gave us “Legendsâ€, gives us a whole different type of film that redeems him! The film doesn’t take itself at all serious which works for it but is about a college-age guy who is believed to be gay by his friend/roommate/lesbian partner and is bitten by a bi-sexual vampire and he believes he is followed by a camera only he can see! It is a bold film in my opinion, which reflects the filmmaker is willing to change and put it on film. It goes completely away from the serious tone of “Legends†to a very non-serious and sometimes downright stomach hurting fall down laughing kind of film and it works! Pretty much, you have no humor don’t watch the film? I give it 3 stars and look forward to the sequel. You can find it and buy it at www.darkmullet.com .
Myth (DVD) – You have no money? Check. We have never really made a feature film before? Check. We love the card game Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, Nintendo games Legend of Zelda, Dragon Warrior, and Final Fantasy? Check. Let’s make a fucking feature length film on no budget and runs at almost 100 minutes long! Check. Well, I got to hand it to these young guys, they had heart, willing people, and some cool locations to put together a really awesome low budget fantasy flick that fantasy geeks must except! It has warriors, dragons, dragon warriors, wizards, an asshole king, all it was missing was a princess with some big tits and it would have been perfect. But anyhow I give the film 3 ½ stars, I really wish these guys had a website but they were called, “Stone Phoenix Productionsâ€! So if you run into these guys, make sure you buy like ten copies of their DVD!
Burial Party (DVD) – A short film from Joseph Dodge who was a producer on “The Secret Life of Sarah Sheldonâ€. He gives you the option of the 15 minute festival cut or the 29 minute director’s cut which of course you have to go the director’s cut. It is a short film about a man who could gain lots of money if he is able to pull the trigger of a handgun to his head three times with rich people watching. Not an original concept but with the way the film is filmed in black and white and the great camera shots of the characters, the filmmaker sucks you into their world and keeps you at the edge of your seat the whole time! I give it 3 ½ stars. The film is apart of Dark Vision Pictures, Inc.
Any comments please send to: LAN_EMAIL_SUBS or www.myspace.com/slasherfilmfan and you can also find more reviews in a book I wrote called, “Gross Movie Reviews Volume One†that is available at: www.lulu.com/grossmoviereviews, if that doesn’t work just go to www.lulu.com and search in books, “Gross Movie Reviewsâ€! Even though Tim and Charlie have already weighed in on
the talented Mr. Holsclaw, I have to add my review of
his first novel to the mix. Edward is an extremely
nice guy and someone to watch in the years ahead.
I travelled a long way to make the opening of Genghis
Con this year, and one of the high points of the
entire show was a chance to finally meet and speak
with Edward A. Holsclaw II about his books. We had
spoken briefly at another convention some years
earlier when his first book, Tiburón was hot off the
presses, but at that show I was on other business and
as broke as a Time Square Rolex, so I didn’t have the
opportunity to pick up his book then.
I have always kicked myself for that oversight, and
now that I have read Tiburón, I’m kicking a little
harder. It’s a great story, and I read it in one
sitting and still wanted more. Luckily, I have
Edward’s next three books to dive into after this one,
no pun intended.
Tiburón begins with a very descriptive and somewhat
flowery opening chapter. You can tell that he wants
every word in his first novel to be perfect and you
can almost feel him agonizing over each turn of
phrase. Then the story kicks in and Holsclaw settles
into a more comfortable style. By chapter two, he’s
found his sea legs and with his feet on the ground,
starts off running and doesn’t let up till the final
chapter.
And that’s the thing that will make Tiburón stay with
you long after you’ve finished reading. The pace, as
well as the villains, are utterly and completely
relentless. There is no rest for the weary, no miracle
save for the victims, just terror, pain and lots of
blood.
There will be the expected comparisons to Jaws, simply
by virtue of the subject matter, so let’s just get
those out of the way right now. First off, Spielberg
couldn’t direct Tiburón today. The gore in this one
would upset his children, or whatever the reason he
gives for sanitizing his films, Saving Private Ryan
notwithstanding. The lone shark in Jaws racks up less
than half a dozen kills in the entire film whereas the
nasty critters in Holsclaws book take out more than
fifty people well before the halfway point. And forget
that don’t go near the water crap, in Tiburón, don’t
even buy a boat, these suckers will get you no matter
where you hide. One unfortunate fisherman got munched
after a shark was netted and hauled aboard, stabbed
and shot.
If there is to be any comparison with Tiburón, a more
fitting parallel would be Aliens. There is the same
kind of relentless pursuit by larger numbers, the same
single minded purpose of destruction. Holsclaw even
captures the same claustrophobic feeling evoked in
Aliens, not an easy task when your setting is the open
ocean, but he pulls it off easily.
One of the aspects of Tiburón that has stayed with me
well after the story ended was the way in which the
author handled his victims. Holsclaw gets you to feel
for them, hope for their survival and then kills them
off in as gruesome a fashion as possible. Many writers
would ease up in some cases, but here you find that
there is no hope, not even for the most innocent of
victims. And that is just one of many things that sets
this book apart from so many other first novels in the
genre.
I keep using the word ‘relentless’, which for me that
sums up both the story and its pace. And in
conjunction with Holsclaws very visual style of
writing, Tiburón is a great experience and leaves me
with great expectations for his other books, and hope
for a possible venture into filmmaking.
Find out more about this talented writer and truly
nice guy at www.fearmaker.com , and tell him BoH sent
you.

Twist of Fate
Step inside a world of possibilities. The thirteen provocative tales told in Twist of Fate will captivate and leave you thirsting to discover…
What happens when a man dabbles in black magic at his loved one’s expense? When a heart-broken single father unwittingly brings evil into his home, will he be strong enough to withstand its will? Can a jilted wife turn the tables on her unfaithful husband? Find out what a young man uncovers when he comes face to face with his deepest fears? And follow the journey of a lonely housewife, who takes a life-changing step into the arms of a terrifying lover.
Laid To Rest
Do you ever wonder why things are the way they are? The novel LAID TO REST, in fact lays to rest the unexplained fears of society. Why are some people just “naturally evilâ€? What actually happens when death occurs? Serial killers, ghosts, rogue scientific studies gone horribly wrong - LAID TO REST takes the reader on a journey through myths, legends, and speculation in an imaginatively clever, oftentimes bone-chilling compilation of short stories. From the back woods of West Virginia to ritualistic blood baths in Texas – LAID TO REST explores, explains and captivates.
Origin:Unknown
Separated from his family for what appeared to be a routine business trip, Ash Bishop is awakened in his Chicago hotel room to screams, blaring sirens and a world devoid of all normalcy. Follow Ash on his perilous, cross-country journey fraught with virulent mobs, corrupt opportunistic insurgents, and swarms of evil arachnids, Hell-bent on total world destruction. Ash must make it to the hills of northern New Mexico to find his wife, Della and their two children. But, Della has problems of her own…
Tiburon
The novel TIBURÓN begins with a mysterious attack on a pod of killer whales at Turtle Beach, Florida where local residents find evidence of a deep sea horror. This new evil lives for the thrill of the kill and annihilates verything in its path. It has claimed its rightful place at the top of the food chain and those who dare enter the sea must beware. It is up to a team of marine biologists, police and coast guard to hunt down the beast and try to put an end to their nightmare before it puts an end to them.

Ok, you meet Edward A. Holsclaw at a convention and he’s a well mannered, soft spoken, friendly sort of person. You read his books and as you think back to meeting him you say “No way that can be the same fucking guy”.
Twist of Fate is quite a fun and sick collection of short stories from Edward A. Holsclaw II & Wendy M. Easton. Any of these stories would fit well in an episode of Tales from The Darkside, Monsters, or Tales from the Crypt. This was one of the few books in a while that I’ve read in one sitting.
Twist of Fate never fails to deliver. There’s a nice mix of terror, horror, suspense, and sheer depravity from cover to cover.
I’m looking forward to seeing him again, just to make sure, and buy more books.

Bastards of Horror and Blood Type Online Go To the Movies
By Tim Gross
After over a year in the waiting the film “Feast†finally seen the light of day or night I should say as we seen at one of the 100 theaters it was being played at this weekend. It is a special screening most likely to help promote the DVD release in 3 ½ weeks! What is “Feast Well, if you are any kind of horror fan in the past two years I’m sure you heard of Bravo’s ‘Project: ‘Greenlight’? A show about that had people send in scripts, audition tapes, etc. and the producers; Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, the Weinstein Brothers, and Wes Craven would pick from them and put them together to make a movie. Well, this time around they decided to do a horror movie since the first two projects bombed horribly! Which they brought in Wes Craven, a horror icon, this time to help with the process of picking the right choice and hopefully a successful one! Well, when it came time they picked a script which featured aliens or monsters depending how you look at it attacking a group of people in a bar and picked a director who didn’t seem to have his heart completely in it. After a talk with Wes Craven, the director John seemed hell bent on getting a horror film made not matter what happened off the set or on. The show featured for 8 weeks showed more how The Weinstein Brothers and Dimension Films were hell bent on sinking the film more than making an actual cool horror film. Everything from undermining the director’s choices in casting of actors and actresses to cutting his budget from 5 or 6 million dollars to under 3 million and giving him maybe 33 days to finish the film! Luckily it showed how much Hollywood is against making a good low budget horror and making a real crappy 60 million dollar horror feature that is PG-13! But John the director did not look back and made the best possible film he could! With the split of Miramax and Disney early this year it seemed we would never get to see this film as there was rumors of the film being shelved like most of Dimension Films product and maybe show up on DVD three years from now when the legal battle was over! But what kept this film afloat was when there is no news about a horror film that looked good, had troubled producers who were assholes, and remakes after remakes coming to theaters, fans kept asking the question: When do we see “FEAST Fast forward 12 or 13 months later and you have now where somehow, someway the filmmaker was able to get The Weinstein Brothers to do a one weekend midnight screening of the film in 100 select theaters!
So last night www.bloodtypeonline.com guys (Ed, Russ, Jarod) and myself went to the screening with about maybe ten other people showing up at the theater. Well horror fans I’m here to tell you “FEAST’ is at least the second best horror film of the year if not the second best behind “The Descentâ€! It has shitload of gore, lots of action, and awesome looking monsters that hump a lot! It comes across as part “Dead Alive, part “Evil Dead†series, part “Near Dark†(bar scene)! The film has some known actors in it such as Jason Mewes and Henry Rollins with some unknowns now becoming known as they are all apart of different projects! Anyhow, it’s a movie about a woman and a man coming to a bar after a horrible accident that involved running over some horrible ugly thing and its family came for them chasing to a run downed bar in the middle of a desert! Once there the action goes as the monsters try to destroy the bar and get inside to kill and eat everyone and it’s up to them if they live through the night or not! The movie is easily 4 stars and shows Hollywood it does not $50 million and CGI to make a good horror film! If you call yourself a horror fan you will want to see this special screening this weekend or buy the DVD in 3 ½ weeks!
