An Exhausting Weekend

An Exhausting Weekend

It was exhausting weekend for yours truly as I represented Bastards of Horror in more than one way this weekend. Getting home from my full time job I got my shower grabbed some stuff and made my way to Fairmont, West Virginia, Friday night to be a part of the big zombie scene in Justin Channell’s latest project for IWC FILMS, “Die & Let Live! Traveling from Pittsburgh to Fairmont is not a bad drive, about 90 minutes but when you take a wrong turn in Fairmont and the sun going down it just seemed automatic that the “Deliverance theme music started in my head… Finally, finding my way to a place that Mapquest does not know about and apparently for good reason as a house a mere 500 yards down the road from the location of shooting seemed like it was the house out of the latest TCM remake and boarded up as well! A bit nervous at first but I made way around talking to people while they sat around drank beer in zombie make-up and eagerly waited for nightfall. Now of course this isn’t your usual low budget film set, Justin is using whatever he can on his $1000 budget: free extras donating time as zombies, FX artists that live in Fairmont and also run an all-year around Halloween store, and trying to not do too many takes on dialogue and zombie scenes. Limited budget does not mean limiting imagination when it comes to small micro budgeted zombie films. When I got there Justin explained this to me, an idea that himself, Josh Lively, and Zane Crosby (who is also doing effects on the film) came up with: “Think about the movie, ‘The Sandlot’ with zombies… I started to laugh and as they were setting up the first scene for the night with one of their stars of the film passed out from a night or day of drinking depending in his mind and seen the vision Justin had and the possibilities of this film being even more over the top and more fun than his first film project “Raising The Stakes? Even though the night went long and bugs began to eat me in my “suicide zombie make-up, I lasted the night and made it until 1:30 am where they were pretty much done, and it was time for me to change make my drive to Pittsburgh once again and get four hours of sleep!
Now, when I heard that alarm that went off four hours later I first thought it was a cruel joke made by my wife and then got my bearings straight hoped in the shower, got dressed and made my way to Middleburg Heights, Ohio for the Twisted Nightmare convention. Main reason I was going to not only meet Michael Berryman again but to test the waters of selling my book to the convention scene for the first time and getting word out that the Bastards of Horror website not only survived its crash in late June and early July but it was rebuilt to be bigger, stronger, (key the Six Million Dollar man music), better and there to either piss everybody off or make contacts and hope for future contacts in films, magazines and shhhh… free table at conventions which I doubt we would get! One of the reasons we are considered the Bastards of Horror! But anyhow the biggest surprise wasn’t how well the people responded to not only my book and the website but Andrew Divoff from “Wishmaster was there as a late addition to the convention. Andrew could not have been a cooler guy to meet and is promoting a new film he is starring with our friend Reggie Bannister and being directed by KNB’s Robert Kurtzman, “The Rage! Overall the convention was a success for Bastards but for many it was a failure because of not much advertising among other things which I will be getting into in a different article with another website! But anyway I made my way home after helping Happy Cloud Pictures call it a wrap on some insert scenes with Debbie Rochon for their latest project, “Abbattoir (god forbid I can spell the fucking movie’s name right). I made my 2 ½ hour trek home after having a few beverages with some new friends in the bar and hit the bed early Sunday morning around 2:30, beyond exhausted but thrilled for how well the weekend went!
