Cinematical Seven: 7 Best Horror Movies of the Past 7 Years
Posted by Jeffrey M. Anderson
From AOHELL’s webpage

I’m a film critic and I love horror movies. According to the studios, I do not exist. This year they have decided that horror movies (among other types) don’t need reviews, and they have opened some dozen of them without press screenings, the latest batch being Pulse, Snakes on a Plane and The Wicker Man. Now, it may be that these movies are terrible. Or perhaps they just require a certain sensibility to understand them. In any case, they deserve a shot, and to show the studios that we critics are capable of getting horror movies, I worked on a list of the seven best from the past seven years. Surprisingly, my master list came out to more than 30 titles, which I painfully pared down to this final seven (I even had to leave out Saw and Ravenous!). Significantly, each of these films was made available to the press prior to their openings.

1. Pulse (2001, Kiyoshi Kurosawa)
This, the scariest movie I’ve seen in years, gave me the creeping tingles. Like Lynch or Bunuel, Kurosawa has the power to tap right into our most nightmarish fears, but does it subtly, normally, like something lurking just outside the periphery of our everyday existence. Released in the U.S. in 2005.

2. Land of the Dead (2005, George A. Romero)
Romero adds another chapter to his legendary, brilliantly masterful zombie series, evoking all manner of classical imagery to build a harrowing portrait of the way we live today. And that’s really scary.

3. Audition (2001, Takashi Miike)
Three words: watch the bag.

4. The Blair Witch Project (1999, Eduardo Sanchez, Daniel Myrick)
Pushing through the hype, the money, the buildup and the backlash, one can find at the rocky center a really good, quite imaginative and gripping film done with an eye on the unseen and the unknown.

5. The Descent (2006, Neil Marshall)
The second-scariest movie I’ve seen in years features incredible use of total darkness as well as a surprising look at the darkness of the soul.

6. Session 9 (2001, Brad Anderson)
This underrated, barely noticed film is perhaps the most intelligent haunted house (or rather haunted hospital) movie I’ve ever seen.

7. The Devil’s Backbone (2001, Guillermo Del Toro)
This creepy flick, improbably set in an adobe school smack in the middle of the bright Spanish desert, may be Del Toro’s finest hour.

KSWA Press Release!!!

Posted by Tim on August 22, 2006

You might ask yourself why would this be posted on Bastards of Horror? Well, the wrestlers and fans of KSWA are huge supporters of Bastards of Horror and we always like to return the favor for their support these past six months! www.kswa.net

KSWA Press Release: “When Worlds Collide Who Will Survive

Pittsburgh, PA - “When Worlds Collide what KSWA Megastars will still be standing tall and which ones will be left holding the pieces of lost opportunities.

The Keystone State Wrestling Alliance presents “When Worlds Collide, Saturday, August 26, 2006 at the home of professional wrestling in Pittsburgh, The Lawrenceville Moose. Bell time is 7:30PM.

With Wrestle/Rock 2006 in the rear view mirror, the amps have been unplugged, the guitar picks have been put away but two things remain constant, the raucous KSWA Krazies will be in full force and the action in the ring will be fast paced, hard hitting and in your face as ever.

It has been confirmed by sources within KSWA Headquarters that a major announcement will be made in regards to the Main Event at KSWA Fan Fest 2006, which takes place on Saturday, December 2, 2006 at the Lawrenceville Moose.

The Double A Challenge will headline “When Worlds Collide as a Fatal Four Way Elimination Match has been booked by KSWA Owner Bobby O and KSWA Interim Commissioner The Latin Assassin. The match will also unify both the KSWA Golden Triangle and KSWA Tri-State Titles. Plain and simple, winner takes all.

In addition to KSWA Golden Triangle Champion “Double A Anthony Alexander, the combatants will be the leader of IT, BIG Mike Malachi, Mr. 8 x 10 Michael Cruz and The Snakeman Deven Michaels.

Will Alexander be able to fend off the Big Man now residing in Belfast, Ireland and the two hungry newcomers to the KSWA? Big Mike Malachi is coming off an impressive win over the equally sized Bloodbeast at Wrestle/Rock and is focused as ever. Did Mr. 8 x 10 pick up on some of Double A’s shortcomings in their last match that he can exploit for the win? After a successful debut, will the Snakeman carry momentum and a 12-foot-long, 70-pound Burmese python named Jezebel to KSWA gold? Anthony is in for the challenge of a lifetime.

The Semi-finals of the KSWA Kruiserweight Kup will take place as Kris Kash will take on Justin Sane and Shane Starr will battle “The Drunken Luchador Joey Quervo.

Kris Kash received a bye to the semi-finals but will he be fully recovered from his match with the mammoth Ali Kaida at Wrestle/Rock. Justin Sane reached the semis by defeating the Kruiserweight King Del Douglas. This match has the potential to be the showstopper as these two competitors are prone to put the bodies on the line with their high wire aerial assaults. Don’t blink because you may miss something.

The upstart Lost Boy Shane Starr reached the semi-finals by defeating Zero in a hard fought match and Joey Quervo received the second bye into the semis. Will Quervo be able focus on the task at hand and overcome the fear of a 12-foot snake slivering over him enough to reach the finals or will Starr continue his rise up the KSWA ladder and wrestle for the chance to become the KSWA’s first Kruiserweight Kup winner.

“Dr. Devastation Lou Martin faces “The King Del Douglas.

The Doctor and The King along with his “power-duo running mate Biker Al have been in a heated feud since Martin lost his KSWA Heavyweight Title. Douglas pulled the wool over Lou’s eyes when he appeared from out of nowhere to hit his “Drop It Like It’s Hot DDT on Martin and helped Biker Al pick up a win a few months back. Lou picked up a measure of revenge at Wrestle/Rock when he beat the “power-duo in a Handicapped Match. What will happen next between the two remains to be seen?.

Will Trapper Tom return to the KSWA Ring Announcing table after his beating at the hands of the Biker Al? If so what will he have to say if anything?.

After losing the Handicap Match to Lou Martin and upon hearing the announcement of the winner, Biker Al jumped the KSWA Ring Announcer. Bobby O furious at what had just taken place, immediately suspended Al for laying his hands on a KSWA official thus he will not be allowed in the building on August 26th. Trapper Tom was reported to have a concussion and some minor cuts and bruises.

La Lucha fresh off of making KSWA Heavyweight Champion “The Enforcer Shawn Blanchard “tap out in a non-title match will face IT member Baracus.

The new Number One Contender for the KSWA Heavyweight Title has Shawn Blanchard set in his sights and will do anything to become the next KSWA Champion but can’t look past the dangerous and focused Baracus. The Sniper has one thing on his mind…to inflict as much pain as humanly possible. Can La Lucha survive this match and get his chance at the KSWA Heavyweight Title in one night? I am sure Baracus and Shawn Blanchard has something to say about that.

What will KSWA Heavyweight Champion Shawn Blanchard and his Advisor Frank Durso have in store for La Lucha? The infamous “tap out at Wrestle/Rock will fresh in their minds and it is a guarantee that it will be addressed. Will La Lucha answer the call or will the combination of Durso and Blanchard be too much to handle?.

Zero and Bloodbeast will go to the depths of hell in a KSWA Hardcore Match.

Zero owns a KSWA Contract because of an earlier victory over the Blood beast, who would like nothing better than to exact revenge and punish his opponent for the loss that has him battling for a contract each and every time he steps foot in a KSWA ring.

After a shocking loss to the hands of Kris Kash what will the menacing Ali Kaida and the other members of IT have in store for the KSWA and its fans? After a few minor set backs they will no doubt be looking to make a statement to the KSWA locker room that they are for real.

New MTI Video Release!

Posted by Tim on August 22, 2006

MTI WILL UNLEASH THE ACTION/SCI-FI HOROR FILM
DISTURBANCE
ON DVD OCTOBER 10, 2006!

A serial killer is set loose to hunt down and kill aliens inhabiting human bodies in the furiously action driven Sci-fi/Horror film DISTURBANCE (a.k.a. Choker). MTI Home Video, the leading independent home entertainment studio, along with Studio Partner Artist View Entertainment, will release the Nick Vallelonga’s gripping feature on October 10, 2006 (prebook: September 19).
Hud Masters (Sloan), a scruffy-bearded serial killer, is giving his last videotape interview before his execution. He begins to tell the interviewer his story of “monsters, murders and death…” when we see a beautiful young Asian woman, running for her life. She is cornered by a powerful bald man in an army jacket who bears a striking resemblance to Hud Masters. Is this a flashback? The present? A flash-forward? A vicious fight ensues and she is overcome by this powerful stranger, who forces a large white pill down her throat. She almost immediately begins to choke, then vomits up a strange clear Vaseline like substance and dies. As the man stares down at his dead prey, a beautiful government agent,L ogan (Porch) steps in and simply allows the mysterious man to walk away. She makes a clandestine call on her cell phone: l”ock location… send cleanup.”
A digital 24p HD production, DISTURBANCE was an experiment in conceiving, writing and shooting a feature film in the span of only nine weeks with an exceptional cast and crew who dedicated themselves to bringing the pulpy, sc-ifi noir world and its various colorful characters to life. After nine additional weeks of post production, the film has taken on its final stylized look that is meant to emulate a hyper-real world that may or may not exist just behind that curtain of reality in front of your eyes.
The film stars Paul Sloan (The Scorpion King, All In, Machine), Colleen Porch ( Demon Hunter, Starship Troopers 2), Hayley DuMond (Raptor Island, Hello Girls ), Nick Vallelonga (Port Charles, Coyote Ugly), Susse Budde ( NCIS, Lost), Robert R. Shafer (The Office, Las Vegas ), and Anthony John Denison (The Closer, JAG). DISTURBANCE was written, directed and produced by Nick Vallelonga ( All In, The Corporate Ladder), with James Quattrochi (Jesus, Mary and Joey, Machine ) also producing, with famed horror film composer Harry Manfredini (Friday the 13th , The Omega Code) writing the score.
DVD extras include: 16:9 letterbox format, director and cast commentary, behind-the-scenes, 5.1 surround sound, interactive menus, scene selection, cast and crew biographies, trailers, and optional Spanish subtitles.

Genghis Con II update…

Posted by Tim on August 22, 2006

BLOOD WRESTLING:
ONLY AT GENGHIS CON II: THE WRATH OF CON
Pittsburgh-based film company Happy Cloud Pictures is proud to announce that Genghis Con II: The Wrath of Con will be hosting a very special event on Saturday, Setember 16: Blood Bath: The First Blood Wrestling Match Ever Held! Seemingly a no-brainer for the horror lover, the event was the inspiration of Cristy “Crusty” Whiles of Toe Tag Pictures, and will be held for the first time ever at Genghis Con II, Saturday only. Itll be a knock-down, drag out good time, says show promoter (and wrestling participant) Amy Lynn Best, six beautiful women covered with stage blood inside the hotel itself!

Genghis Con II runs September 15-17 at the Greentree Radisson, just minutes from downtown Pittsburgh. Having made its premiere last year, Genghis Con is the first of its kind in Pittsburgh, making its dual focus the horror genre and the wide and busy world of independent filmmaking. This years special celebrity guests include Lloyd Kaufman, the president and co-founder of Troma Entertainmentthe oldest independent film studio in the country, responsible for such films as The Toxic Avenger and Tromeo and Juliet. Joining Lloyd is a variety of horror entertainment staples including actor Reggie Bannister, from the cult series Phantasm; Leslie Easterbrook from The Devils Rejects and Police Academy; actress and producer Debbie Rochon (Nowhere Man); actress Linnea Quigley (Return of the Living Dead); April Monique Burril, the star of Chainsaw Sally; Ari Lehman The First Jason from Friday the 13th; international promotional model-turned-actress Sofiya Smirnova (Abattoir) and many more to come! (Guests subject to change.)

Because of the special nature of the Blood Wrestling event, an additional charge of $5 will be charged for those interested in attending, but space is limited and only 200 tickets will be sold beginning at 11 AM at the Happy Cloud Pictures booth. Tickets to the Blood Wrestling will only be sold to those who already hold a weekend or two-day pass (available online or at the door). Blood Wrestling tickets will not be sold online. While only those eighteen years old and over will be admitted to the Blood Wrestling, there will be no nudity involved with the event and no alcohol will be permitted inside the event room. A photo session with the ladies will be held immediately after the event (additional charges for photos apply). Portions of the proceeds will be donated to charity.

This is a world-premiere event, says Best. To our knowledge, no one has ever done anything like this before, combining horror movie fun with wrestling. It seemed like the perfect idea!

Vendor tables and sponsorship packages are still available. Please contact us at LAN_EMAIL_SUBS for more information or to set up interviews with the promoters. And, of course, check out: www.genghisconpa.com
