Justin Chanell's 'Raising the Stakes' among others playing at a film festival in West Virgina

Posted by Tim on May 4, 2006

“I’m so excited, and I just can’t hide it. I’m about to lose control and I think I like it.”

The Premiere Graffiti Film Festival will promote West Virginia’s many talented and diverse filmmakers and showcase a pair of Hollywood-made movies that have greatly impacted the art of making motion pictures. Graffiti is proud to bring a night of family-friendly entertainment to the northcentral part of our state. Over the two-day festival, Graffiti will present more than 10 films and
documentaries and give the public an opportunity to meet and interact with
several local filmmakers. Tickets for the festival are $15 and can be purchased at the Warner Theatre box office, the Graffiti offices in Parkersburg and online at grafwv.com. The ticket price includes an evening reception on Saturday where refreshments and finger foods will be served.
OK, enough with the Pointer Sisters’ song. I’m just really primed about our upcoming film festival.

In fact, the planning for the May 5-6 Premiere Graffiti Film Festival at the Warner Theatre in Morgantown is coming along nicely.

We’ve worked out the entire schedule of films, and after chatting with Graffiti film columnist and West Virginia film expert Steve Fesenmaier, I’m confident we have the right mix of films and documentaries.

According to Fesenmaier, we’re showing two of the four best films ever made about West Virginia — “Matewan” and “The Night of the Hunter.”

I’ve seen both films and they are on my all-time favorites list — especially “The Night of the Hunter.”

Keep an eye out during the next couple weeks for features on “Matewan,” David Strathiran, who is currently filming “We Ar Marshall” in Huntington, the Warner Theatre and much more. And, for our faithful readers in Matewan, look for Connie Dale in the next week or so. She’ll be in town doing her Lost in WV column.

Remember, tickets for the film festival are on sale now. Tickets are $15 and include both days of films and a Saturday reception with lite snacks and a roundtable discussion with local filmmakers. Tickets can be reserved online at gravwv.com and can be purchased at the Graffiti offices in Parkersburg and at the Warner Theatre box office in Morgantown.

As for the bill of fare for the festival, here it is….

Friday, May 5 — 7 p.m. start time: “The Jolo Serpent Handlers,” “Matewan” and “Surf Nazis Must Die.”

Saturday, May 6 — 1 p.m. start time: “Raising the Stakes,” Westboro Baptist Church Documentary, “Believe,” “American Chain Gang” and “The Night of the Hunter.”
