Bad News For Co-founder of Bastards of Horror!

Posted by Tim on March 19, 2006

Charlie Fleming, co-founder and computer man behind Bastards of Horror was taken to the hospital this weekend. It isn’t serious but enough to keep him in for awhile. He has celleosis( at least I think that is how its spelled), basically you get a bad rash that kinda looks like a flesh-eating virus on your skin and you get sick. I talked to Charlie tonight and he says he’s doing ok with no DVD or VCR and his five channels that work in his hospital room! He could be out as early as tomorrow night or Tuesday morning or he might have to stay until Saturday if the infection spreads. So guys you are stuck with me, an insane horror fan with poor grammer until he is able to come back. If you want to send get well wishes, you can send them to:

First off, let me just thank everyone who is coming to website and enjoying it. Second, in less than a month we have hit 1000 hits which to me is unbelievable and pushes me to try to make the website not only cool but better for the people who keep coming back to check out what Charlie and myself are doing. Like I have said over the past few weeks Bastards of Horror has a lot coming up but not only that we are glad people are starting to come out and not talk about how much they like the site but voice their opinions about banners, content, pictures, etc. Please keep it up we love hearing from you the fans and we will keep trying our best to bring you a great website.

INDEPENDENT FILM FEST at the Book-N-Bean Review

So, you think I’m nuts for driving 86 ½ miles for a small film fest? Yes, I’m nuts but not for driving 86 ½ miles from my house to Fairmont, West Virginia. For one, someone for www.bastardsofhorror.com needs to check something like this out. It sounded great! How could you beat seeing a free double feature of “So, You’ve Downloaded a Demon? and “Marty Jenkins and The Vampire Bitches? You just can’t… Second, a young and very talented filmmaker named, Justin Channell, was putting this double feature on for Friday the 17th & Saturday the 18th. I have watched some of Justin Channell’s work, and at the ripe old age of 18 he is already coming into his own as he is head and shoulders above most low budget filmmakers that I have met and known now that are twice his age. Are we talking Sam Raimi when he made ‘Evil Dead’? I won’t get into something like that right now, so let’s keep at he is very talented and should have a bright future ahead of him.

Now, back to the Book-N Bean Film Fest where Justin seems like an old pro when it comes to putting these film fests together. The Book-N-Bean is a small, quiet coffee shop that is awesome for something like this to take place in a smaller town like Fairmont, West Virginia. First up, was a short film shown which I hate myself for not knowing the title but was not the highlight at all of the evening. But that was the only bad thing of the evening. Next, was the first of two features: “So, You’ve Downloaded a Demon? The movie was apparently made by Todd Livingstone who was a comic book artist for ‘Image Comics: Black Forest and also was a Fairmont, West Virginia native. The movie is a funny look at demon possession of a college student who is trying to run for student president. The possession happens when the candidate for student president (DAVE) is in love with or stalking a girl who practices witchcraft and looks like the stereotypical Goth girl. He finally breaks down to talk to her one day and she and her best friend are trying to find a way to get back into the good graces of their Wicca coven. Well, from there the comedy begins as Dave volunteers his best friend to help the two girls out by trying to hack into a website called, “SatansPossessions.com in order to bring forth a demon showing their coven they are worthy of being part of the coven again. Of course things go wrong and Dave is possessed when he accidentally hacks in. Lots of puking, funny demon possession, and lots of poking fun at people who think they know the stereotypical Goth girl! I give this movie 2 ½ stars as it looses steam after the first 50 minutes and never picks back up. Started out great but by the end you are just glad it ended. A topless scene by one of the two main girls in the film doesn’t help the film out in the end but I give the filmmaker credit as she had two very perfect ripe melons! But anyhow moving on….

In between features I had the chance to speak with not only Justin about his future but Nic Peasante (sorry Nic if I misspelled your last name) a producer/actor of “Marty Jenkins and the Vampire Bitches about what his feature holds. Nic and Justin seem to have a lot of projects on their plate for this year for not only for their company ‘Freak Productions’ but others also. And Justin couldn’t have a better producer than Nic helping him out on future projects. Next, was another short film and a trailer for what was being shown Saturday night the 18th. Then, “Marty Jenkins and the Vampire Bitches was up. The movie was directed by another young and talented filmmaker named Henrique Couto, who in my opinion also has a bright future in filmmaking as I have seen some of his work and always cannot wait for his next movie. The opening sequence of the movie is fucking hilarious as it opens with Marty Jenkins being born in 1978 and his dad declaring Marty is ugliest baby ever! We come to the present and find a man who looks like he is straight out of Lancaster, Pa! It is Marty, and he is dumped by his girlfriend and he is depressed as he does not know how to go through life without her. All he knows how to do now is go to the video store he works at to talk to his best friend who is played by none other than Henrique Couto. The movie does not take itself serious at all which helps the film along greatly. The movie is played for laughs all the way to the end. Which Henrique spits out possibly the greatest line ever cinema history when him and Marty are speaking about horror films: “Marty, ‘Children of the Living Dead’ is living proof that John Russo and Bill Heinsmann have Down Syndrome! People, including myself, laughed for the next sixty seconds. But back to what the movie is about… When the vampire bitches start to take over Marty’s world by turning his friends around him into vampires its up to him and only him to kill the vampire bitches after he runs over the vampire hunter “Sloane (played by Nic Peasante). The movie is paced very well and has great mixture of blood and comedy until the second half where it seems to drag down and not able to get back on pace until the last couple of minutes. But the one thing to keep in mind about this movie is this was only a rough cut as with a few edits in the second half of the film, Marty Jenkins goes from being only a good film to an excellent film for all horror genre fans to enjoy! I give it 3 stars and hope there will be a second just to see Henrique mock myspace.com with his myplace website in the movie. One thing that made this trip worth it besides getting a free copy of Justin Channell’s “RAISING THE STAKES but seeing that with filmmakers like Justin, Henrique, and producer/actor Nic there is hope the ‘low budget digital video movie making age’ and it is Freak Productions!
